Newcomer / Intro Access to Sol or Achenar

Is there anything of importance in either system? i've just received access to them and i'm wondering is there any good reason to enter them. i have 2 engineers i want to build up relations with (scratching each other or worse?), so site seeing is not top of my agenda.

Not really. It's just nice to have, I guess. There are pretty views in Sol and a 6g airless world in Achenar.

There are engineers in both Sol and Achenar. Sol's Dekker is totally useless, while Achenar's Tiana Fortune can be useful for some scanner mods (G5 long range A-class wake scanner is a must for any DWE hunter - just be sure you have enough power for it)

i'd say that's fun. i find it tricky to have a controlled landing when it's greater than 2g - with my "outta the way, coming through" style driving.

i don't have access to Tiana yet, but i would like to see what she can do with the scanner and collector limpet upgrades.
Anyway i'm sure there are more important questions that need to be asked.

Sol contains the only three non-procedurally-generated planets in the game: Earth, the Moon and Mars. Earth is always the focus of visitors, of course, but Mars looks pretty cool too, as it's been terraformed and has rather unique geography, with the volcanoes jutting up clean out of the atmosphere.

There's also a couple of "easter eggs" in Sol system for the persistent egg-hunters to find: the two Voyager space probes, several million Ls away. You need to follow the guides to find them.

Achenar is less interesting, plus has the disadvantage of being a giant star; the interesting inhabitedd worlds, including Capitol itself, are thousands of Ls away from the jump-in point.

In terms of actual gameplay, both Sol and Achenar offer this: five native factions all of the same faction type (five Democracies in Sol, five Patronages in Achenar) so there's never any war there. The NPC populations of both systems are huge, so even a large group of players would find it very difficult or impossible to try to change the controlling factions. Becoming Allied with all five factions takes some work, but doing so can give quite lucrative mission opportunities. Being Service economies and often with one faction or another in Boom, bringing cheaply obtained Medical Diagnostic Equipment from high-tech systems to either of these places can be the most lucrative trade activity in the game. Unfortunately, it's a "dead-header" trade route as Service stations export nothing but biowaste. Which is again a wasted opportunity; I'd like to see the capital planets export unique trade goods, like "ancient artefacts" from Earth and "artwork" from Achenar; these goods are already in-game, yo just can't buy them anywhere. Come on, give a trader some reason to go to these places.

It should also be pointed out that finding missions asking you to go into permit-locked systems still is not a thing, even if you have a permit. Which seems silly to me.

A few rare goods in each of these systems would make sense as well.

Not relevant for rank permit systems, you don't need a mission once you have the rank.

Yes, but I'm talking about a perk of owning the permit, not a means of acquiring the permit.

These are the capital planets of superpowers. There should be plenty of people wanting to travel to and from the capitals, for work or for sightseeing. They should be wanting to go there from everywhere in that superpower-controlled space, too. Transporting politicians, diplomats, ambassadors from neutral worlds or rival powers... where are the missions like these? Plus, the old FE2 description of Achenar goes on and on about how tourists from the central worlds of the Federation are brought in to view the Imperial Palace - the only place on Achenar where Fed tourists are actively encouraged to go. Likewise, there should be plenty of citizens in Achenar wanting to make the pilgrimage to Earth. Since, logically, few people in the galaxy should have both the Sol and Achenar permits, pilots who do have both permits should be in high demand, taking people back and forth from one to the other.

Sorry, misunderstood. I agree, having missions that used the fact that you have the required permits would be great. They should pay a premium for the system being a permit one.

Oh they are just the Capital systems of the Federation (Sol) & Imperials (Achenar)...

Assuming that it's still there (haven't been back to Sol for a while) the res site at Jupiter is pretty cool as far as res sites go. I remember flying to it the first time thinking 'hmmm getting quite close to the big fella now...' From memory it took me about five minutes to supercruise out of the gravity well on the way back out.

As for Mars though, although I get why it's been done I have to say that terraformed Mars is one of the most heartbreaking things in the game for me, with an eye on future atmospheric landings. I'd love to have some SRV action on the actual planet as it is today.

Io still remains the body I want to be able to visit more than any other though. Flameproof pants at the ready obviously.

How do you get an Earth permit -- what do you have to have and what do you do ---

The Sol/Earth permit is given by the Federation military, one you reach the rank of Petty Officer. To get that rank, you need to complete missions for minor factions that are affiliated with the Federation. Petty Officer is the fourth rank in the Federation (after Recruit, Cadet and Midshipman).
