what wrong with having more subspecies in the game???

Nothing wrong with reskins or variants.

I'm personally not a fan as I feel was probably added in as an easy to make, rushed animal to make the DLC look larger so they could charge a higher price. Why didn't the original timber wolf have a white variant skin like most other animals, hm? I get the feeling it was held back, then listed as a 'new' animal because someone said they could sell in a DLC instead.

I guess maybe they should come out with subspecies dlc for people that are interested in dlc pack though

I would love to see some subspecies themed packs with bears, lemurs, etc. So long as they're cheaper than the packs that contain animals that require entirely new models.

From what I’ve gathered via this forum and reddit, it seems people aren’t upset by the arctic wolf in general but that frontier has decided to release a paid DLC 6 weeks after the game came out when the issue tracker is filled with issues that haven’t been fixed on the base game yet. (Ex. Laggy trade market, animals morphing through walls and underground, guest walking on staff paths, staff getting stuck in zoo after being fired and can’t leave the zoo, game crashes, babies being sent to trade center automatically, etc.)

I personally am thrilled for any extra content regardless of if it’s paid or not and I think the arctic wolf will be awesome!

Happy to get it, what I'm unhappy about is the price of the DLC for only 4 additional animals...all of which appear to be mostly just reskins of existing animals.

i dont see aby sense for adding Animals like sumatran Tiger malayan Tiger etc. this gonna look like zoo tycoon 2013 that way.id like Arctic Fox/Musk Ox much more than Wolf,i'm afraid we really gonna have flood of unnecessary copies of same Animals called differently.Of course it adds more options,but... do you really need same animals with fancy names? instead of different Animals with different names?

I think they should come out with regular animal packs and subspecies pack for those who like it can buy, that will make many people happy

although Sumatran tiger , Siberian tiger , Bengal tiger and Malayan tiger are all tigers. but different species have erent size and behaviour , and the preys that they hunt are different

I think the biggest issue people have with the arctic wolf is that they think it's just a clone of the timber wolf (which I'm going to refer to as 'northwestern wolf' here for the sake of argument) while said wolf should have a white skin variant to begin with. I think most people don't realize there are more differences between the arctic wolf and the northwestern wolf than colour, biome and name alone. The arctic wolf is overall smaller, has a shorter snout and legs, smaller ears and (if I recall correctly) are relatively heavier. They also tend to have more black skin surrounding the eyes. White northwestern wolves aren't actually white either but more blonde/creamy. Another problem in noticing the difference between these two wolves is that in captivity they are allowed to interbreed so the traits that make them more unique become harder to distinguish (though they are already challenging to tell apart and I'm sure interbreeding happens in the wild as well). Added onto that, northwestern wolves lose a lot of pigment as they age so wolves with a creamy fur can become completely white. It doesn't help most images we see on the internet are of captive "arctic" wolves, either.

We could argue that these small differences aren't worth the money and we'd rather see a competely new animal added, and I agree with that though I do like the idea of having arctics. I certainly hope we will get arctic wolves that resemble their wild counterparts more but if I have to be honest, I don't have very high hopes. I would have preferred to see arabian wolves or african golden wolves (even though we have a lot of african animals as it is) added as subspecies instead because they look noticeably different, and have the "timber" wolf receive the black, white and other colour variants it should have.

@TheGuardianSpirit Very informative.

I'm not saying that irl the timber wolf and arctic wolves are clones....but I am saying that in game, other than the skin, they likely will be, or at least very nearly will be. The list of animals is suspect in that all are similar enough to animals we already have that I really do suspect Frontier of taking a lazy-developers approach to adding them and I don't think we're going to see much new in terms of animations and animal behaviors. And that is the "clone" part that bothers me.

Real life differences are irrelevant if Frontier doesn't do anything extra to reflect that. You mention interbreeding for example, between arctic and timber wolves....I'd be very surprised if they put that option in the game.

I'm a bit negative about the DLC after the announcement for the above reasons (still going to buy it though.. I love Arctic Wolves IRL, I can't not buy it). Very excited for the upcoming patch additions and changes that they announced though, so that is at least redeeming.

People might think that creating subspecies doesn't add much to the work for developers, also this doesn't add much variety to their zoos. Plus these will come in paid DLC which they won't be much willing to pay for. These might be the reasons.
Anyway, raindeer and polar bear are the two animals out of the four that I noticed, because they are pretty famous animals.

If it's more than a basic white skin retexture, I will be shocked - who knows, maybe they'll surprise everyone with amazing new wolf/polar bear models.

I would still have preferred to see them flesh out the vaguely named wolf that's already in the game (which should have multiple different coat colours), before adding another wolf subspecies. That applies to all the animals though - the skin variety between individuals is extremely lackluster. I'd much rather see that improved rather than just leaving it to focus on adding new animals (for paid DLC).

THIS is a fan made remake of the gray wolf from ZT2 from 2013. How on earth have we ended up with less variation in animal skins in a game from 2019?! It's not like the modders can fix the lack of variants for them in in PZ, as they decided not to allow modding.

I for one would be very disappointed if the polar bear was a reskin of the grizzly as both look quite different. I honestly couldn’t see frontier doing this as all their animals look very well done actually. As for the wolf they look very similar kinda like the grizzly and Himalayan brown bear.
