Actually really like ED Odyssey BUT the inability to swap out of VR to the monitor with one click is killing the VR experience

I've posted on this before, but I cannot go back to 2D after playing in VR. That said, disappointed as I am about the lack of full VR in EDO, it is the inability to switch seamlessly from the headset to a monitor in one click that is killing the VR experience.

If I could play in VR and simply "one click out" of the headset when on foot I'd be happy.

PLEASE could FD just give us this option...

I actually prefer the Periscope mode currently in place. But that's just me. I've never played elite in pancake

Well after much debate in my mind weather to try Odyssey for a feel on the VR experience. I tried today. I'm disappointed but not as badly as I thought. I had to skip the Training mission at the start as it kept crashing my rig. I'm running i9 9900k 128gb ram and RTX Strix 3090 so its not the hardware being . played lots of VR game's without issues although I realise not all games are as intensive as others but none the less after skipping tutorial I went for a fly drive and run about no issues. Had to mess with controls a bit. I have a DOF reality flight seat the full one with 6 motors and x52 stick n shifter. This is amaze balls for flying and driving. So a wee tweaking to using an Xbox controller for on foot was grand. I thought the pancake view would have been really naff. which tbf coming from the polished VR feel and experience in cockpit it is rather a massive let down but it does work. However I then started to mess with the vanity camera and realise just how close the game is to having VR 3D view whilst on foot I got further disappointed. I did notice there is a hit to frames between Pancake and 3D view via vanity cam on foot, but this would be expected. It actually ran really well. SO I'm really confused why the hell FDev haven't allowed at least the Option in some form for users to swap between Pancake and VR 3D view in headsets. Even if they presented the user with a warning this may not be comfy or results vary until further development blah blah. So I'm thinking they really truly have dropped VR all together. Maybe in the future something will happen. But till then I'm not going to play.

I've been at this game since launch and yes it was entirely my choice to buy a ton of VR gear when I realised were the game was going and it potential, but this was the Game that sold me on the purchases. I know I'm not the only VR enthusiast here. I use my kit for many other games so it hasn't gone to waist. Just really the seat I don't use as often as the rest. But I think most would agree that Fdev has dropped the ball here. VR is progressing and it will be a big kick when Fdev realise later that keeping VR and keeping it smooth transition between different elements of the game would have been worth it. My rig for playing this game in flight or driving is just awesome. I understand not everyone has the avenue to attain such things and that will put me at a minority but certain what isn't going to be a minority is VR headsets. They are getting cheaper and easier to make.

Moving Forward and I apologise for swearing here. I have been looking at Star Citizen a bit. I've tried Vorp X with it. It work reasonably well. I haven't found the balance of settings mind and Devs for this game are looking to ad VR near completion.

SC & ED are awesome games.

ED - Hasn't implemented VR fully with Odyssey making the game feel off balance to a VR experience

SC - Are building their game with VR intended so when its implemented it will be easier to do so, which they did initially have DK2 support way back.

Id hope with what ED has got already, with some wee tweaking we could have a VR experience on foot that just nails it nicely with using an Xbox controller. Considering next gen consoles are aiming to implement VR in the future this is like a great option at this stage.

If ED don't do something and the long awaited SC gets VR implemented into their game. Well guess were all the kudos goes for the Best VR Space sim.

Anyways that's my thoughts.

The only other hope and wish I have is there is some greatly amazing technically sound minded coder somewhere who's able to modify something to get what us VR enthusiasts want and send it to Fdev for looking into in the hopes it sways their decisions. Hell that person may also get a job out of it lol.

Id usually say see you in the black but I've gone and dropped into a black hole for now

Hi - I agree with you that full VR seems practically there given the vanity cam VR experience. It is such a shame it appears shelved. If it is all down to performance and frame rate I suspect most of us would be happy with a beta version for the time being. Like you, I invested thousands for the rig and VR having backed this in Kickstarter and so anything that keeps VR alive would be most welcome.

I've not been around since the Odyssey alpha, but after putting a new rig together after finally acquiring a 3090 (only cost me a pair of mostly functioning kidneys) and Vive Pro 2, I decided to fire up Elite and see how little advice FDev took on board on VR feedback.

Apparently nothing.

Given we're not getting a proper VR solution, the absolute very least they could do is give us settings profiles - VR profile, Not-VR profile. I mean, would that be actually that difficult?

On top of all the times they've tried to give us aneurysms from forgetting to add visual fx to both eyes rendering pipelines, I'm beginning to get the feeling they just don't like us.

Oh, and Odyssey runs like garbage even on an RTX 3090. I should have kept the kidney.

Im with you here. Although i have rog strix 3090. And vanity cam hits my frames pretty hard but its still playable. I managed to fly about drop on a surface. Bounce about in the SRV ok and walk about with my huge projected screen in my pimax 8kx. It is a serious disapointment really. Not played since my post above mind. Doubt i will. You never know maybe later they will do something but for now it seems like its the end. Reading up online it appears odysee for pc will be fixed then consoles will be worked on. Im just not sure what development will come after that. We were supposed to be getting thargoids etc sumwere down the line for the fps ellement. Im still hoping later updates after console release will add thargoids and new things to the game. Im still hoping the VR gods intervene and we get as u say the option for 3d view whilst on foot.

Ive actually been playing borderlands 3 with Vorpx and although its not 100% as good as native vr support. Its doable and then i just have a controller plugged in. So even this with elites native head tracking and vr support for odysee would be a massive step up from what they have now. All the performance issues does sugest it was flat screened in headset because they couldnt get the performace stable enough. And there was some pressure to release it. I underatand the possible stresses and difficulties or frustrations on the devs side aswell as the player side but still doesnt scratch my itch for a space game that was prior this ticking so many boxes and potential boxes for years to come. For VR i feel this game has died a wee bit. Theres a lot less happening in the vr comunity on this game. In ship and srv Vr is just unrivalled imo. But hell the on foot. Come on Fdev. Ive messed with gfx config files etc through tutorials here. Surely a way to toggle the native vr view for legs in a file would be handy. And if it makes peeps sick Fdev cant get Stick for it. As users are required to tweak it for use. Granted ur gonna need a mint pc to make it work. But if stability issues are that rubbish then surely create the ability to do so. Then a discussion thread for those using it were we can post settings screenshots with stable results. Let the VR comunity test it to death. Ull get all the results needed surely to make some guided adjustments later. Anyways ill just go on as my VR love has been taken from me. My rig below is insane for flying and driving. Oh and ive tried Vorp X likely others have 2 but its dog poopy. Run game 2d n attach Vorp x. Just doesnt work the same as native VR. Its does hook though. Im not a Vorp X expert though so maybe others have managed better.
