If you mean computer applications then EDDiscovery is without doubt the best thing since sliced bread for explorers.

The sync rate is too low, especially for map redraws.
If you mean equipment... you'll need the scanners and an SRV. The latter is optional but I'd advocate getting one.
Also, for a quick credit boost, you could do worse than a few hops on the road to riches

Absolutely - I Alt+Tab to it when FSSing as it shows information at a glance, for example; which bodies are terraformable, what elements are on surface, etc (saves wading through the System Map).
I just noticed that EDSM shows terraformable bodies on your dashboard in the system you are currently scanning (FSS) - maybe that works for consoles as they can't use EDDiscovery but they do have a means of EDSM getting their info. (I know nowt about it.)
