Advanced Docking Computer, has it ever killed you? Or tried to?

The old standard Docking Computer could try to kill you, under certain conditions.

Anyone ever been killed by the Advanced Docking Computer (ADC).

Yes
But, truth be told, it was a combination of ADC and unsupervised shieldless Cutter (i auto launched, then alt-tabbed out) - so a bit out of the usage envelope, since one is not supposed to leave the ship unattended.

No, but then all I've ever done with them is sell them.

Doesn't help.

But I've read of this happening. I'd recommend just scrapping it altogether and doing it manually, gain a slot, but blaze your own.

yes mine tries to kill me all the time and its been getting worse since odyssey was released..

from the ship faffing around inside the station running into the station infrastructure to approaching the slot on the wrong side and sliding over to and past the green lights and ramming into the wall to the ship swiping the sides of the slot as it enters or leaves. also getting rammed by ships launching or entering the station

its also killed me a couple of times by boosting into the station once was kind of my own fault for letting it engage on the wrong side of the station and it boosted into a rotating arm. another time it just boosted into the station for no apparent reason.. both times before odyssey tho

I fly both XBSX and PC; auto-dock on XB EDH seems stable with no issues. EDO is a mess and became noticeably worse with U11. Entering stations seems to be okay, comes in cockeyed and it has final tweak to align itself but very rarely does it try to destroy you. Post U11 almost every exit requires taking over control to stop wanton destruction. I've had it boost into the side, ram under or over the slot and once it jammed me under some kind of superstructure. It is not to be trusted at all in EDO. I generally use it only to get off the pad and make sure I have priority to exit - once you move from "waiting in que" to "auto-launch inprogress" you are less likely to have a ship hit you from a blind spot. Seems when I don't use auto-launch it's like you are not recognized and the npcs maneuver without regarding you - I've even seen two get locked together, which I was able to gently push them out of the way without a fine. Risky though because once I hit a siddy on the way out in my Cutter when I was over 100m/s and got destroyed by the station. That said, I do find auto-dock useful when I need to enter a station without getting scanned (illicit cargo for missions or smuggling). In a Cutter I can enter a station between 200 and 250 and immediately zero throttle to auto-dock and it will check speed with some elaborate twists and turns and put me on the pad without hitting anything. Only an rare occasion will I hit the back of the station if I don't zero throttle before clearing the slot. If over 200 m/s I've never been scanned while entering, just have to not hit anyone exiting or waiting in the que - the station will destroy you quickly if you do.

Yes, it has killed me twice. First time I just returned to a rebuy screen, second time I was stuck in the entrance because another big ship was coming in, and station opened fire.

On a few occasions it gets confused inside the station too, and might lead you elsewhere and not on your landing platform.

But overall, if you have a good connection (which I didn't always have), it works fine.

It kills everyone at some point, teaches you that the game isn't exactly AFK compatible when docking.

X4 does it much better, when it's autopilot goes wrong and you smash into the side of a station you get a lovely little message...

"Autopilot Epic Fail".

The unshielded cutter seems to be the key.

Add shields to it, the ADC works perfectly, both on takeoff and on landing. Get greedy by wanting to do 792T at a time, then the ADC will occasionally side thrust you into the station while "waiting in queue" or just decide to miss the slot all together and boop you (repeatedly) underneath it.

No such luck for me. My C6 Prismatics are called into action regularly if I’ve got an ADC fitted. I only tend to use one when I’m loading/unloading between a station and my fleet carrier, for ease, but I’d agree with @LordJim47 - Odyssey seems to make it act up with greater regularity than Horizons did.

I set up my Cutter for a nice easy landing on my Carrier, straight in with a gentle descent and then sat back laughing as I throttled back for the ADC, which decided to boost, boost again, point straight up and wiggle about a bit. The next time I saw my Carrier I was bashing the underside of it. That was immediately after having the ADC repeatedly pile headlong into the station wall before finally fluking its way out.

I‘m beginning to become concerned that the ADC is actually Marvin and despondency has finally got the better of him.

Never let the docking computer engage close to the outside of the slot. It will boost to try and get on the right trajectory normally straight into the structure.

It will also get you killed when you use it to enter a station when you have a bounty on you. It's too slow and you're likely to get scanned by the police, who will revoke your docking permission, hen blow you up.

Yup, I've made that mistake a few times including just last week. Zeroed the throttle a teensy bit too early... Luckily my shields took most of the damage.

Its nearly killed me when having the thought of buying on.
Total waist of a cargo slot.

Oooo I feel sick at the thought
