Advanced docking Computer

Just joined this forum and have had the Legacy Horizon for a couple of weeks now on steam. As having a new ship I see the ADC in starport services outfitting but no way to install it to the Modules panel in the cockpit area. Ive seen utube videos on how its used it their dropdown menu. I made the mistake of paying the 100 credits to transfer the module thinking it would install since that was the only usable link.Any suggestions? Thx in adv....W6DLB

When you buy a hull it comes with the autodock module fitted. You can toggle whether auto dock and depart are enabled in your right HUD 'ship' tab, there are settings for both features. If enabled autodock will take over the ship controls when you have got docking permission and set your throttle to zero.

To fit an autodock module to a ship that doesn't have one fitted you go into outfitting while docked (not all docks offer the outfitting service and the module isn't available to buy at all stations with outfitting), it goes into any available optional slot (same place as cargo racks, shields etc) but as it's class 1 size probably best to put it in a class 1 slot & save the larger slots for larger modules. Note that there are two versions of the autodock module (Docking Computer), one is for docking only, the other does both docking and undocking.

IMO learn to dock & undock manually and use that slot for an HRP (Hull Reinforcement) or DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner).

Transferring a module only changes the location it is stored (at a cost & with a time delay), you still need to go to outfitting to put it on your current ship (storing or selling an already fitted module if needed). Module transfer has a cost as you've discovered, outfitting is free and you can sell a module for the same price you paid for it so experimenting is free too (ie buying a module then selling it again) but any engineering & mats you do to a module will be lost if you sell an engineered module so best to only engineer modules you know you plan to keep.

Don't worry about a few hundred credits, you'll soon earn that back :)

Im in a sidewinder I assume that its to big being that Im not a class 1. Also Im pretty hip to what it does. I heard that no matter what ship you have even a sidewinder that its installable. I actually did the dock manually in my training as well the one where you pick up the 10,000 credits. My concern now is that this will be my first mission run and I dont want to screw it up. I have already picked up and have paid fines for docking issues previously. Outside of that I appreciate your speedy response.

Not sure what you mean here, perhaps lost in translation a bit, but you can fit the docking computer to every single ship in the game, including the sidewinder. I'm not sure what you mean above by "no way to install it to the Modules panel in the cockpit area" as this is not where you install modules. If you do not see it in this list and if you are docked, go to the station's outfitting and you can buy it there. If you cannot see outfitting, you may be in an outpost that doesn't support outfitting. If that's the case then you are out of luck and will need to go find a station that does. As Riverside said, every ship you buy comes with this module installed by default. So you would have had to have removed it yourself if you no longer have one onboard your Sidewinder. You may already have it installed, and it is turned on by default. Have you actually tried launching your ship? You'll see immediately if you have it installed and turned on as it'll have the option to "Auto Launch", not just "Launch".

I'd show you how to do all this but I don't have legacy installed and have no idea if the UI is different.

I guess you are in your free starter sidewinder. You were docked somewhere else, and used outfitting to remove your docking computer module (and maybe some other stuff) and then flew to & docked at another station. You used outfitting in the starport services menu to remove the module & store it, you used it again to pay to have the module transferred to your location at the time.

Have you flown to another location since transferring the module? If so, go back there, open Starport Services and click on Outfitting (in ship services, lower right of the starport Services screen).
In Outfitting you will see some choices on the right (first one is Hardpoints), click on 'Optional Internal' and look at the bottom of the list of slots.
The lowest one will be 'Planetary Approach Suite' (unless you removed it), the next one up is where your docking computer was.
Assuming that slot is currently empty, click on it, then choose 'Transfer Options', 'Transfer' and you should see a list of locally stored modules (in your case I'm guessing you will only see one, the docking computer you paid to have transferred to that station).
Equip the module (click on it & choose 'Transfer to Ship') & voila you should have autodock again :)

When you have just started a new Cmdr, that's the ideal time to try stuff & make mistakes, because even if you screw everything up you can reset your save, losing all your progress so far & just start again & with your newfound knowledge hopefully not make those mistakes again. Make different ones :D.
The longer you keep playing one Cmdr the more you will lose if you reset so now is the ideal time to really, really make a mess of things.

You will get better, it is a complex game to start but the initially steep learning curve levels off pretty quickly.

Good Luck!

Sidewinders come with an ADC installed - maybe you're trying to install another (in which case it won't let you). Check all the slots under Optional Internal and it should be near the bottom (the module list scrolls).

Also - consider posting questions in the newcomers section https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forums/elite-dangerous-newcomers-guides-tutorials/ - it's a bit kinder (you've been lucky so far, but it might not last :) )

Good luck!

you don't need it - learn how to dock manually/land manually - generally the only device I keep attached is supercruise assist.
The only time I've seen people get/keep an ADC is when flying a very large ship like a Type 10 - why? Docking a whale isn't as easy as it sounds.
Especially on a planet

Not to mention cross traffic.

Biggest reason you will eventually toss the ADC is you will find that 50/50 of the cases in terms of docking at a station is you end up waiting 10 mins for the damn mail slot traffic to clear - the game gets a bit funny funny like that.
If your playing in "open" - no ones going to wait - so they will "cut the line" and cause your ADC to basically glitch/hang/compensate for increased traffic.

Cause no one really auto docks.

Planets aren't so bad as there's no mail slot to compete with.
Outposts are ok as they are open area's as well - just fewer landing pads.

But anyway - that's my 2 cents.

Happy flying!

I don't want to repeat the suggestions here, but maybe I'll just add some very basics:
  • Your Sidewinder has 6 module slots for optional internal modules. As the "optional" suggests, you don't need to fill those with actual modules to get the ship off the ground, but there are a lot of very helpful modules indeed.
  • 2 of your optional slots are size 2, and 4 of yours are size 1. Size 1 is the smallest size there is.
  • Both the standard docking computer and the advanced docking computer are size 1, the smallest size. That means that you can fit them in any optional slot on any ship. Yes, even in a size 2 or bigger slot.
You can only install or deinstall modules while docked. If you are docked, you do this:
  1. Choose "Starport Services" or "Local Services" from the central menu.
  2. The home page of the station appears.
  3. Choose "Outfitting".
  4. On your left hand side, choose "Optional Internal".
  5. Choose any of your empty slots there, preferably a size 1.
  6. Now you should be able to browse the shop.
  7. Choose "Flight Assists".
  8. Choose the ADC if it's is available.
  9. As soon as you buy the ADC, it's installed in the exact same slot that you selected in step 5.
If you already have an ADC installed, the shop will show "Module type limit exceeded".

If you're still having trouble, maybe posting a screenshot could help.

I've never been to any station with enough human players present to disrupt the operation of the ADC. It does behave a bit funny if I have fewer than two pips in ENG, and occasionally I have to take over when the ADC tries flying my ship through the wall of the station, but otherwise it's reliable to be worth using.

working on trying to get URL from steam regarding screen shots Also Im playing in solo mode temporarily until I get my sea legs so to speak. Also all my modules are listed as loaned if thats any help. I did go into " optional internal" and had 1 empty slot and led up to transfer that module to the ship with no results in the module dropdown menu as well as the "ship" dropdown. What I might do is take the mission and see once if Im travelin and close to destination after requesting dock permission and throttle to zero and check modules again. Seem kind of pessimistic though because I still have the launch command vs auto launch to start the mission.

Screenshots are stored locally (on your computer, not on the internet). You can upload small pics to the forum, or set up an account with an image hosting site. I use Imgur (it's free):

I have already did a reset and also new that their was hardly any progress so I though the same thing. Also I did transfer to ship when I found a empty slot in the optional eternal and went thru the steps but to no avail after checking the drop down menus in the panel on far right in the cockpit area under ships as well as the modules. I knew it wasnt working because I didnt have launch assist, but the standard launch instead.

Have you found the outfitting screen in station services & added your docking computer back in?
If not what's the obstacle you are trying to overcome?

I don't know why FDEV stopped the docking computer from controlling the ships pips. I suspect it is just another example of them mucking things up by accident.

P.S. I use the normal DC, for some reason having the ADC in a ship makes me feel dirty - I don't mind being lazy over docking but that nonsense of letting the ship either sit in a queue or wobble about banging into things is just so yukky.

I begin to suspect there may be some sort of communicative issue here, as I haven't the slightest idea on what could go wrong when simply buying a module.

You mentioned the word "transfer". If you own a module and it's located at a different station, it takes time to transfer this module to your current location. Buying is immediate, transfering is not. That's all I have to offer right now.

"Transferring" a module moves it from wherever it is currently stored to your current location's stored modules. Transfer takes time depending on how far away the current location is. Transfer does NOT put the module in your ship. You have to go to outfitting, then go to optional internal. select your empty class 1 slot, then select flight assists and you should see your stored module there avaialble to be fitted to your ship - or it will show how the transfer has left.

Your modules are "loaned" in the starter Sidewinder, so you don't get any cash for selling them. Otherwise they are just the same as modules you buy.

I had an option to buy one but as a new player was short of credits. By default I know I have one thats free and will try to figure it out....Thanx
