Advanced navigation and exploration HUD

These look awesome. I think this should get moved and stickies to the suggestion thread.

Just brainstorming. Much of these ideas have been suggested already, I'm just sketching them on the HUD.

PIC 1

- Permanent display of next plotted jump + distance + primary star type. Allows for anticipation: one doesn't have to spool the FSD or open the GalMap to know what's coming next
- Star type and luminosity class. Instead of having to open the GalMap...

I posted a message today asking for this same thing, would make it so much easier. Allow you to see if the next star is scoopable, or if you should top your tank up before jumping.

Even tho I personally kinda love the retro hud that we have, it's very 80's sci-fi, and I'm a huge fan of 80s sci-fi, however this post is great, I would definitely love to see more toggle options

Some great suggestions here from Qohen Leth, the final suggested HUD gives more information yet looks cleaner at the same time. Provided some the extra items like estimated jump ranges could be toggled off in the settings I'd be very happy to see all of this implemented.

As long as a lot of this can be toggle off on by the side panel. So there no clutter.

Now I rather have them work on the current system map to do some of the things they suggesting before Alpha and beta version of the game. You know make it look like a system map.

Maybe when someone scan a system have a option to load system in the background so it fast open close once loaded.

It looks good. I think it needs a separate HUD because that makes it more cluttery.

Of course, there would be options to toggle off parts of the HUD, it's called 'advanced' for a reason :D Keep the simple nav HUD when you cruise, then switch to advanced when you're doing your research or something. Kinda necessary if you find yourself in a fight too.

As for background loading, I totally agree. God, this should already be in place: once you enter a system, the game loads the sysmap in the background, no matter what. Unless one is buckyballing or preferes to scroll through the nav panel, one will eventually open the sysmap 4/5 times... (I won't mention the fact that open said map removes total control of the ship, but eh... *whistles* Some efforts needed around the maps, for sure)

+1 for some great ideas.

I would move some HUD elements a bit lower, out of the main screen view.

FD needs a QoL and complex re-write pass on the HUD to make modules players can turn on or off, relocate to where they want them, and with adjustable RGB colors and/or full color solid-object rendering on the HUD. Some of this info might require a computer module or scanner- like the exploration data would only show if the ship has the right type of exploration scanner, obviously.

Orrey view is still "on the list", but likely will be separate screen like galaxy map because it is jut too complex to layer in the cockpit. However, I would propose that FD already has an Orrey of sorts in the central sensor disc/radar area. If there was a toggle to put the main star in the center, in place of the player ship, I think it would be a useful tool for orientation and as mentioned to plan efficient system scanning. It would also just look cool.

I truly hope FD take a good chunk of Season 3 or whatever they call it to devote to core gameplay and UI updates to flesh out what we already have. 2.1 mission updates and ship outfitting updates were excellent second passes and virtually everything else in the game except combat needs that treatment.

Very stunning. I had no idea that I wanted all that, but now I do:) I feel we have an adequate all-purpose HUD right now in ED and it's great, but something like this would seriously add efficiency as well as increased immersion of being a pilot, piloting a craft. Seriously, have some +rep. Nice job putting it all together!

Sorry for the necro, but I came across this thread via the link in the OP's signature in another current thread, was intrigued and had to come and have a look and thought wow - please add this FD. +1 rep Qohen

This thread... man, I was playing with VERY similar ideas in my head for a log while and preparing to make a post about them (with some mockups, too) and then I found this. It's basically almost identical to what I felt was needed in game! And, frankly, I can't rep you enough for putting this together!

There are some details that I disagree on or have a different take, but what I ABSOLUTELY agree on, is that we need more in the UI. What I also would like to see is that some of the more involved stuff was made optional (via a toggle from in-game panel), like the orbit lines were done, etc., etc... Honestly though, we need more UI...

Absolutely fantastic stuff Commander, it boggles my mind why something like this is not in the game in any form yet. And I think its too late to hope.
