Advice for those with shields in deep space

Since there are no NPC or pirates about, turn your shields off in the modules section especially as you will, if like me, never come out of supercruise(as shields don't work in SC or HS anyway).
I say this because, and quite correctly, Cmdrs advise that carrying a shield generates heat, which is one reason many Cmdrs don't carry one.

The difference on my setup is 4% when I am scooping :)

p.s. remember to switch it back on when entering the bubble !!!
(I have a sticky note on the top of my screen :D )

You can turn off LOADS in deep space, even the Power Dist. I run with only:
Thrusters, FSD, Sensors, Life Support, Scanners and of course PP

AFAIK the HSL can be off till you need them, but I always forget to take them
I think you can even run without Sensors if you are travelling

I had a minimum temp of about 18%

oh I hadn't even thought of turning off the distributor and the sensors for general flight. Good thought!

EDIT: Wow, can't thank you enough for that post actually. Disabling those two extra modules dropped my standard running heat low enough that I no longer have to fly away from a sun to cool off enough for another jump. You just nearly doubled my speed in witch space with that tip. Id rep you twice if I could.

I leave my shields up when exploring.... heats never been an issue, but it works better than a tinfoil hat (though I also wear one) at keeping the freaks out of my head in witchspace

Also means I have a shield if pulled out of SC by an unexpected (or freshly patched in) pilot...

"Docking Permission"

Yep, docking permission is a bigger problem. The ship will warn you with "Landing gear not deployed!", but if you forget to ask permission, you will only notice it, once you're entering the slot. It may be too late then (getting a fine is almost sure)

When exploring, I leave the shield on, because i like to make screenshot in rings.....and a shield may be the difference of crapping your pants, and crapping your pants + blowing up the ship.

Why are you wearing brown trousers in an asteroid field? Just park on one and have lunch:

(seriously though kids, turn your shields on in asteroid fields)

The handwritten note on my monitor says "FUEL UP"

I've spent too long in the Neutron fields, and have come dangerously close to an empty tank several times.

Let´s make it vice versa:
Switch OFF everything except:
F(r)ame Shift Drive
Thruster
Life Support
1 Heatsink module
Detailed Surface Scanner
Advanced Discovery Scanner
Coffee machine :D

When coming back around 200 ly near civilised space it´s time to lighten the console up again: Switch it all on again - the shields, sensors, power distributor and defensive measures.
Just leave CargoBay and AFMUs off.

I know from experience I dont *need* shields unless I'm mining or seeking combat (to me interdictions arent even a factor -- submit, boost, jump = win). Just exploring they are fairly useless, yet I carry them anyways. For one simple reason: I really suck at navigating asteroids lol. I love to explore some systems very in-depth (and sometimes I just want to get an awesome picture), so I carry D - class shields to keep weight down and keep me safe during my sight seeing.

I run with no shields on my t6, the problem for me is landing sometimes I am a bit rough and that translates to hull damage....woe betide any bumps with hanger walls etc

That's how I do it as well. Running at 18% has saved me a bunch of times when I've jumped into stellar sandwiches. The ship has been cool enough to stay in SC and escape without any heat damage. I turn shields back on if I fly down into planetary rings though...just in case ;)

You can turn of the Cargo Hatch also.

I leave the shields on because real life has a tendency to interrupt me when I am just about to exit an FSD jump. My forehead has a permanent sunburn from all those opps moments.
