Advice for those with shields in deep space

Heat of course depends on the ship / build, but on my exploration Asp during my previous trips I never found it necessary to turn off shields - I'd never overheat even when at full scooping rate range topping up from drained tank to the max. I honestly think people turning off a bunch of stuff was more for RP reasons than actual tangible benefits, at least on ships built with exploration in mind that already handle heat pretty well, such as the DBE, Asp and even the Anaconda. Only reason I ever turned them off on the Asp was to free up power for the AFMU when field repairs were needed.

Actually when you was sure you wouldn't have needed them turning off the unecessary modules did reduce heat by around 10% IN THE CRITICAL PHASES OF SCOOPING, something not noticeble on normal situations. That allowed you to carelessy hit the FSD button even when heat was at 65-70% (if you were scing away from the star).
Now that with PL it's better always land with shields charged and PD active, and knowing that in a very long expeditions your mistakes and loss of concentration are your worst enemies, I will leave shields and PD on all the time, using those few extra seconds before hitting the FSD button.

Wow. I can't believe I made it 12,000ly from Sol before I found this.......This is amazing, dropped my running heat from like 55% to 19% thank you so much!

I'm the same. I explored with my shields off pre-Horizons (thanks, Dognosh, for that tip!), but after forgetting to turn on my shields and losing a few hull percentage during a Distant Worlds landing, I just leave them on all the time and adjust my fuel scooping accordingly.
