Ships Advice on engineering my Chieftain

Sometimes, even though I fly a fully engineered meta fdl, I feel like I am flying a coffin, too.

:)

There are some great PvP pilots out there who can obliterate my ship simply by looking in my general direction.

How would I make the ship not a "coffin"?

Skill in flying. It's not only about Hitting, it's also about Not Getting Hit. Range control, imo, is one of the most important skills.

Gradually engineer. Unfortunately, this also means building up a pile of engineering materials.

Have fun so that this game is always something that you look forward to doing!

:)

The only difficoult (sometimes too much!) fights (I use Medium ships) I have found are the Spec Ops Missions and some very High Threat ones (too many ships at once) ,all the rest, once Engineered, are a piece of cake.

Exactly (y)

Well Ive only done engineering with farseer and tod the blaster so far.
Engineers,as you know, unlock like a chain reaction, grade up with one and you'll be presented some more,Farseer for example can do G3 on your Thrusters (Dirty/Drag Drives) that will be a massive boost for your speed/boost and handling, then go on with the rest: Hull/HRM/Shield/S Boosters/Weapons (Todd can work your Multicannons) etc..etc..

Honestly the grind for mats just makes me want to play the game casually

I hear you.

The engineers you should have are:

Selene Jean for hull and armor
Didi Vaterman for Shield Boosters
Lei Cheung for Shield Generators
The Dweller for Power Distributors
Professor Palin for Thrusters
Hera Tani for Power Plants.

Your preferred choice of weapon will determine the other engineers. As you unlock engineers you will pick up encoded mats and manufactured mats. It's the raw mats that you will have to go out of your way for.

Yea Im going out to Davs Hope now for manufactured. Then I'll be wake scanning in famine sector distribution centers. Kind of ugh.

I just wanna do some pew pew lol. I really hope Odyssey adds fun stuff.

Don't..Dav's Hope will give you only low Grade Mats with the exceptional Grade IV,Go to Boom systems and Farm long timer HGEs for two/three different kind of Grade IV/V mats,go to War/Civil War systems and farm HGEs for another couple of different Grade IV/V mats,go to Imperial systems and farm HGEs for Imperial Shielding (Grade V),this for Manufactured in no time you will have plenty of High Grade stuff to exchange at Material Trader. For Data (searching for Famine state it's a waste of time) scan military ships and go at Jameson's crashed Cobra site for Grade IV/V Encoded mats (you can farm Jameson's crash logging on and off as always),also when fighting at Nav Beacons/RES/CZs always have a cargo bay (for limpets) and a Collector limpet, every ship you kill will leave stuff in space,it's all Manufactured form Grade 1 to 4 depending of ship type and NPC's rank.

How many systems do I have to visit to get HGE's? I've been to several with 2 bil pop and when I scan nav beacon, no HGE's

EDIT Ive now been to 10 different boom systems and got 1 HGE with a 10 min timer. LOL i give up

Seems unlucky to me... been collecting lots of HGE the past days. All I did was to look for either Federal/ Imperial hightech-systems with state BOOM or NONE on EDDB.io. Just make sure to look on the galaxy map for the actual state of the system. Didn't even look at the population tbh.
Sometimes I got 3 at the same time, collected them all, then rinse and repeat after roughly 40 minutes. Also, they seem to spawn somewhat randomly, can be 1, can be three, can even be 5 at once. dont give up, you will find them. :)

Edit: If you are somewhat close, the system IX (LYR-Space, but federal somehow) yielded great results just 2 days ago.

I searched for Empire Imperial govt with high tech and got zero results on eddb when referencing the system im in...Xinca

I am getting 144 :) First 5 for you to have a look at: LTT 2513, Omicron Columbae, Rabh, HIP 50694, Goller
just remember to double-check on the system map for the system state. If the system has more states than NONE or BOOM, these will be overridden, and you wont get the HGE's you are looking for.

The above is my PvP build. Any PvP build, with the exception of Thargoid Interceptor combat, will suffice for PvE.
I use a lot of fixed weapons, mainly short range blaster railguns which can only do damage within 1.5 km. The size 1 slots are great for debuff type experimentals. Hence the emissive laser and corrosive multicanon. Short range blaster rail guns are not easy to use, but extremely satisfying. You may want to use weapons better suited to your current skill level and preference.

I use a 5A power plant because it is lighter and therefore the ship will go faster. Should you use more power hungry weapons you can go to a 6A armoured power plant with thermal spread or double braced experimentals.

If you fight a lot of NPCs you may want to put in a point defence turret in lieu of the heat sink or chaff because once your shields go down, the npcs will spam missiles, which will damage your weapons beyond repair.

Since you are new, I also would recommend gimballed weapons in lieu of what I use. I cannot recommend any myself because I do not have any experience with non fixed weapons other than gimballed multicannons. The size three gimballed MC has a rather slow spin up time which I find irritating. The size 2 weapon slot is underneath the chieftain and does not converge nicely with the size three weapons. That is, the two reticle dots of the large size weapons do not sit directly on top of the medium size reticle dot.

Maybe someone else here has experience with chieftains and frag cannons? I'm going to guess that a combination of gimballed frags and long range rails would be optimal for PvE.

o7

[EDIT] The main reason my build is PvP is because I tried to emphasize Thermal and Kinetic resistances. I do organized PvP and missiles are outlawed and no one uses torps.]
I think I have found my new Sensei for builds. Holy Forktards

Very practical stuff there I had not even considered short-range railguns.
Tis me favourite vessel

Ok another thing is that when i try relogging I lose all emission signals but I went back to the nav beacon and rescanned then I got another HGE

Don't forget an occasional emissive munitions experimental. Helps ur gimbal track better and keeps targets targeted when they heat sinking. Pve easy mode engaged
