After Beyond, FD's priorities will change...

I suspect 'Beyond' will be the last major 'free' update to ED; one reason I really hope the exploration livestream and the other livestreams will be successful. I also agree with others that the final release will be just before Christmas as it will not only conclude the year but also conclude the 'free update' era of ED.

Anything after that will be paid DLC imo which should mean that any further expansions are of a high quality. With 1,700 hours of enjoyment gained from ED Horizons, I have no real complaints and nor am I entitled to any. It was the best £40 I have ever spent on any game and the VR experience is stunning.

Frontier will continue to change or at least redirect their priorities and any further expansions will have to pay for themselves. Cosmetics will not provide sufficient capital for further expansion and the stockholder's report seems to indicate this.

Having said the above, I for one would be happy to pay real money for atmospheric planets, NPC bridge-crew and see NPCs walking around in stations...and perhaps, even space-legs but - and this is where people's priorities vary - I have no interest in squadrons or carriers and would not be willing to pay for further development of the same.

This is the advantage of paid-for DLC; you choose what you want and then pay for it.

Thoughts please...

You maybe correct that anything major for now on will be paid for unless it is again core gameplay inprovements, such as missions, enhancements to the BGS, etc.

I have no problem paying $20-$40 for an expansion every year or so as long as they're good, high-quality, bug-free features that I'll actually use (and can be optionally NOT purchased if they're features I don't have any interest in).

Time will tell. Que sera sera and all that.
But your definition of ‘high quality’ may be different from the poster above me, the poster below me, or the 3rd poster on page 2, if this thread lives that long.

I dislike the optional part, for one reason.

It forces game design decisions that may not necessarily be in the best interests of the game as a completed piece.

I have no problem with this - I think the last 'free' season has been excellent so far, and I'm really looking forward to the next update.

I personally think the last season was to set the game at a fixed 'baseline', and will be built from there

I thought they said that after Beyond the next expansion would be primary focus, they're already working on it apparently. It will be paid as well, they said that too. Isn't that how this is supposed to work? Beyond has been the only free major 'season', it's the exception to the rule. Back to the Horizons model from now on, Beyond was a kind favour by FD in acknowledging that the game needed core and QoL improvements that owners shouldn't be expected to pay for. Very honourable of them, cos it ticked off LEP holders. Now it's back to the paid model and give some love to the LEP holders (I'm not one).

I think the road after Beyond will be a mix of both free updates and paid for DLC. Frontier needs to make money, but I have a hunch they will keep releasing general improvements for free to keep everyone on even ground, but also sell new major features like atmospheric landings, gas giant permits, player surface base ownership, etc.

I personally think space legs will be worked on and fleet carriers these are the two most requested and discussed features.

Frontier wouldn't be stupid to ignore this fact.

Or we buy another "season" of expansions.

FD stated earlier they dont want to do Season model again. Its a 'get cash up front at the cost of being tied to promises', which isn't the best thing if cash isnt an immediate concern. They've shifted (according to their report) to a 'keep things under wrap, only offer when done' model.
