After looking at the new beta, I have a few comments. It is time for serious discussion AND the DEVS to listen to us.

Well, I have a problem with it being called a sandbox game when it's so empty.

But, I see where you are coming from and am glad your enjoying it. Rep

Thanks for the rep and your understanding of how I see the game. I can totally understand where you are comming from as well. Since Elite is still very much in developement, I just can't put any judgement into wether or not it will reach what you want out of the game further down the line. It fits me right now, and I enjoy it a lot for what it is, and hopefully, we will see updates that might fit your taste as well.

It is going to be interesting to see the chained missions and how they play out. It might be a nice start to something more engaging for people that wants that out of the game. Have some rep!

The cool stuff comes when SC is near release :p so we can steal all their players.
on a serious note i somewhat agree. And somewhat not. Why? Most of my sentiment is allready written down by other posters.

Context. GTA gives you reasons to care about what you're doing and why you're doing it. My constant mission running and bounty hunting has probably had significant impact on the BGS over time as I tend to stick to one system until I find a reason to move. Do I know I've affected the BGS? No. Does the game give me any indication that I've affected the BGS beyond my rep and mission rewards increasing? No. As a consequence I couldn't give a monkeys about the BGS and therefore what I'm doing and why I'm doing it beyond the fact that I do what's most profitable and I do it to buy mods/ships. That's an incredibly shallow reward loop.

It does? "Gives you a reason to care" ok what is that reason? because I quickly found GTA Online boring, trying some of the new missions and stuff, but then nothing, to me it feels absolutely pointless in GTA Online.
As for BGS, yes, the game does give you an indicator, but what you are saying is that your individual contribution isn't big enough? And of course if you don't care about BGS sim well yeah. not much to say there.
But really what is is the reason GTA Online gives you? this is a pure question, nothing else.

I wasn't talking about GTA online. You said GTA, I took that to mean GTA. I don't play GTA online because it's boring.

That's exactly my point. Monopoly costs what, £20? Would you pay £20 for a notepad? People paid upwards of £30 for ED. They expect a game, not a blank sheet of paper.

Not for the paper, but yes for the set of rules that let you play with blank sheets of paper. RPGs are just that, a set of rules, and some RPGs don't even have rules, just some guidelines.

You dont need a game, or a setting, or an adventure. You just need to ask the following question to experience the best games ever made: "What do you want to do now?"

Anyways, this is going offtopic. I just found your comment a bit shocking to me.

Ahh... yes.

This is a good post, beacause it highlights a problem with BGS; if you are not in a player group with a single goal, your achivement will not show much, if at all with the next tick. This depends on the system though, low population requires less effort, large population requires more.

A small system like... 30k in population... 2-4 missions for any of the factions should show a significant change in their standings... a System with millions in the population, as a single player you can't really do much.

That said, it would be a good idea to implement a way for a single player to view _their_ contribution to the BGS, no matter if it is a high populated system or low populated system.

What I do not think we can get rid of though, is the wait for the tick.

I strongly disagree...GTA5 is still an absolute blast to play...when it comes to clearing memory fer the new shiny of the month, GTA5 gets a higher priority than this game. ED only just survived this process last time because I'm a man if my word...said I'll give them till summer to impress me, but failing that, I'm not waiting around forever.

There you go. Different opinions. I got bored quickly with GTA. You love it. Fair enough

Not at all... it is a Sandbox game... You have to make your own choices without being guided. It is, in a way, a simulation of real life, but put into a Sci-Fi setting. For me, Elite is an experience more than a "game". I view it as a "secondary" life that I can live and breathe.

There are a lot of room for improvements though, I am not saying that, but the basegame is something I do like a lot. I do hope FD will flesh all these base mechanics out along the ride, but I would be lying if I would say that I feel the current game is boring. I am enjoying it a lot.

Everyone paid for a game though. If I wanted a Novel, TV Show, or Movie I would consume those as my entertainment. While I do read, and watch media related to Sci Fi, I purchased this Game so I could play a game.

There is a difference between an amusement and past time (Games of our younger years.) and playing a game. One is a lark and doesn't require rules and boundaries or other players.

The term game that is synonymous with "Video Game" means an environment or contest in which a set of rules and boundaries can be used to determine the success of one side or the other.

So things like skill, intellect, and familiarity can influence how good you are at said game. A game is set up so those 3 essential things will determine the outcome of an encounter. Either with the computer or another player. In ED that is not the case. The game was never designed around the idea of equal chance and over all balance. Otherwise we would only have one vanilla ship in the whole game.

If the game were set up to be an actual video game, then things like Griefing and the magic mystical NPCs with unlimited jump range could never exist. FDEV is willing and able to reign in the NPCs but for some reason never the griefers. So basically they have created 2 entirely separate games and are trying to Frankenstein them together. One set of players must adhere to the rules put forth by the game designers in order to be succesful, the other group can ignore all rules of the game and have fun. Not an even playing field. Even though it could be.

So that being said, since there are 2 different games. One side being the griefers have an infinite amount of fun to be had. Their needs are simple minded and of a singular/ unessential/unneeded aspect of the game. That being wanton destruction of player ships and being the cause of an ever shrinking community. Driving them out faster than boredom ever could. The other players want a story and a game environment that makes sense. They also want things to spend their money on. They want to actually find things out in the Galaxy that dont require being led by the nose from the developers.

When it comes down to it, why are credits even really needed for this crowd. They dont want to grief people, so they dont need to spend their credits with that sole purpose. Sure you can buy a bigger ship, but then what? Mine some more? Trade some more? Explore some more? To what end may I ask you?

If you are mining you want to make money. If you mine in a Sci Fi setting, you want to make a lot of money and fend off pirates out of your large claims. You want to provide materials that keep the game universe running. You have quotas to meet and supply chains to manage. You have people to deliver to. Not in this game unless you use your imagination.

If you are trading, then why are you doing it. In sci fi you trade items to destabilize entire areas of space with the express intent of propping up government/corporate entity. You are providing services to keep people alive and provide supply chain transport for mining. Not in this game unless you use your imagination.

If you want to be an explorer you want to find things. In the sci fi setting you would find derelict ships that have a story. Exploded planets due to some unknown cataclysm. Civilizations not of a human origin. Complex lifeforms not yet perceived by humans. Anomalies in space. Anything not a beige rock. Not in this game unless you use your imagination. You will never find those things on your own, however whenever the Dev team decides to add something they will spoon feed you the content one dull year at a time.

To ask that they actually add content instead of base game mechanics isnt too much to ask. Especially 2 years after the fact.

I'm not talking about a tabletop RPG though. I said a blank sheet of paper, not a copy of D&D.

Edit: Also, given that some of the best games are made with blank sheets of paper, why don't we all just buy a license for Visual Studio so we never have to buy another video game again?

I would not quite call your example RPG and we already have similar missions so it should not he too hard to add something like what you saying here. As far as other players hunting you I am not sure how other players would made aware of your mission.

Creating a new type of mission: highly rewarded missions that can be taken for several players at the same time in OPEN, who returns the artifact to the contractor wins!, in solo and private groups, the game logic will send NPC marines/smugglers/pirates to you.

The good thing for this mission is that will be fair, because the objetive is in a place where only can be reached with space legs!, in this case, doesnt matter how good or modded your ship is, all depend of your skill to grab the object, jump in your rover, and call your ship away of the marauders! :D. Of course like any CG, you have to be aware that near the destination station someone will be stalking you with a suicidewinder to collect the price!. Is just an idea dont kill me for that guys!

As long as I enjoy what I do in Elite, I will not complain. And you can't really change that with whatever words you are using.

As I said, Elite is in developement. Lets have this conversation when Elite is done?

Also, you make it sound like I should not enjoy the game I have in front of me... why? I take it for what it is; a game that is in developement and I enjoy the things I enjoy... what is the problem with that?

This thread is boring. ;)

Maybe this isn't the thread for you ;)

Example, remains valid what is it that.

Explain what a reason to 'care' is?

In the actual game itself and not it's fun for a while but ultimately too shallow online component? I care about what I'm doing because I want to see how the characters develop, how the story progresses and basically "what happens next?".

The Fallout/FarCry and GTA series are great examples of how to do a sandbox game. Give the player total freedom within the bounds set by the environment but allow them to engage in a well told, interesting story as and when they feel like they want to. Or, if it's a multiplayer game with no storyline as such, give players the tools to create their own content. I'm not talking about map editors or mission makers or whatever, I mean the players and their actions are the content, ala Eve and most other MMO's. MMO's are about people, not the game. ED does neither of those things.

I'm not saying I don't know what Elite is, I do, but the simple fact is that the demographic that's buying and playing the most video games in 2017 isn't the demographic that's staring at their cobra with tears of nostalgia creeping down their cheeks. If FD want this game to go for the long haul they're going to have to start catering to this demographic at some point and trying to shut down threads where these opinions are being expressed is only going to hurt the game in the long run.

and u get offended cause of what? ur lack to accept that other ppl find elite isnt boring?... or cause u NEED all the ppl agree with ur OPINION?

Firstly, I'm not offended, simply amused. Secondly, I'm amused because your inability to present any kind of counterpoint to what I said leads you to the age old personal comment. Discuss the topic, not my age, thanks ;)

the topic is PERSONAL OPINIONS but like i said YOU NEED ppl to AGREE with you....u have some and some that doesnt agree with you ...and the comment was about old games on blank paper..:)

Repped!
Yup it all comes down to read text on mission board and imagine the rest.
We'll see this year where it's heading, maybe FD nedeed time to finish first things first. Time will tell!
