Ah'm Un-Instawllin' Steeeem.

Frontier Support finally got back to me, and yes, I can run both my main, and alt accounts from the standard Elite folder.

Steam, like my NPC crew, is eating my resources, and returning very little. :(

Will report later, after validating files.

How much resources does Steam use? Does it have much of a performance hit? I don't have a high-end PC and I can't say I ever noticed. I'll get the odd low memory warning from W10, but closing Chrome usually fixes that.

Too much, sometimes over 100 MB, not counting the fact it monopolizes my startup- nothing can run while Steam "validates" itself. That's just the main process thread. I'm not counting the sub-threading.

Turns out I can log on and off between accounts OK. My main concern is with my third-party apps that had been pointed at the Steam folders. I still have my EDSM keys, and support is good with Captain's log, EDD, and EDDN. It will get fixed. If there are any problems, I backed up all my control schemes and logs prior to start. :)

Steam used to be a back in the days of Windows XP and single/dual core and for memory use but since Windows 7 and Windows 10 and DDR3/SSDs I've never really noticed it being a problem. Thought the quad core processor had put multi tasking issues to bed.

OP are you on an older PC????

My PC, frame rates are identical via either launcher, and the few mbs it uses in ram is nothing. You would probably use far more using a browser and 3rd party sites :p

In my experience, it only effects startup while it updates. It's worse if you have a bunch of other games that auto update all the time but I believe you can turn that off.

bruh, how old and limited is your PC for 100MB of memory usage to be "too much"?

do better.

In my experience Steam is really bad for your computer.
I too would not recommend blowing hot steam into your PC.

The gaming service, however, is perfectly fine.

Not that I'm an advocate of Steam, but I've never had a problem with any game that Steam is the root-cause of.

But, I can understand if the PC is a potato one and needs as few things running as possible when gaming, so yes maybe always-on DRM platforms like Steam/Uplay/Origin may interfere with the resources. That is why there is a segment of people that do not like always-on DRM in games.

Steam's resource consumption may not be an issue for modern PCs, but DRM is DRM. It's there to benefit somebody else, not you.

Well. Given that he is Worried about 100mb usage in the Backround of the Process. You can assume his PC is a Potato alright.
I would assume that he has very small amount of Processing Memory. Or an very Slow Harddisk. Which would explain why it Slows down his Computer so much.

If you got 512 MB Ram and an Old Harddisk from 1999 which has a slower Data Reading Speed than early DSL Connections. 100mb of Memory being used is an Tremendous Block of your System.
Albeit I am really wondering how any System that can Run Elite Dangerous could possibly have trouble Running Steam in the Backround.

Elite Dangerous is fairly Demanding. Especially in the Memory Department. So I am fairly Surprised that he can Run it at all with a System where Steam would be Noticed in the Background.

PC is approaching 4 years service, running Win 7 Pro. There shouldn't be pronounced performance issues, but my 16 GB memory has between 15-20% committed at any time. Kill all the Apple processes, etc, and it goes down to 10-20%. Steam has lots of hidden things running in background, and startup is a pain. And, yes, Steam is DRM.

No performance issues, I just dislike Steam because it's real purpose is to just another means for advertisements to reach us.
You have no idea how much I hate advertisements.

Care to name just one of these services...? I ask as I've never herd such a claim before. Tell us Ralph, what have you found that millions of other PC nerds have missed all these years.

Also, just tell steam to not load at startup... It really is that simple.
