AI Copilot System ChatGPT style for Immersive Gameplay

I wanted to suggest an idea that could bring a whole new level of immersion to Elite Dangerous: an AI powered ship copilot using something like ChatGPT.
Imagine being able to go AFK on a trip to Beagle Point and have your onboard AI handle fuel scooping, jump planning, even logging discoveries all while talking with you like a real copilot.
an actual learning AI that responds dynamically to your journey would be next level.

It could:
Handle neutron boosting and route corrections
Log your flight and discoveries
Provide real-time combat feedback
Have customizable personalities
Give you that “living ship” feeling
You could play solo, but never feel alone. and it would help out with the "space madness"
I hope the devs consider it as a future immersion feature or experimental mod integration. I know a lot of us long range explorers and RP folks would LOVE this.
o7 Commanders.

The game design is annoying like that on purpose. You have to do everything manually and you have to wait a small amount of time between actions. It makes people play longer and forces them to look at the game.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not against this, I'd like some automation in the game. However, they won't even give us a keyboard shortcut for toggle supercruise assist.

It's in the works (not by FDEV, it's a fan project). I have been testing it and the early proof of concept looks promising :)

Not sure if the developer would like me to say anything more about, so I won't, but yeah, it's being worked on :)

If that was a game feature, ok... but (by connecting the OPs suggestions with whatever opaque things that fan project does) isn't that just botting at that point?

E.g something that auto plots and jumps while you're afk?

It's not that sophisticated :)

You've got two separate feature sets here:

1) A chatbot to talk to you while you play the game, tied in a bit to the Journal output so that it knows more context about what's currently happening to you. Not impossible as a third-party tool; the chatbot API bill would probably cost considerably more than the entire rest of the per-player hosting cost put together so it seems vanishingly unlikely that Frontier would ever want to implement it as a first-party feature, though.

2) A whole bunch of ToS-breaking automation of gameplay, which if Frontier wanted to be possible wouldn't be banned in the first place. "Be AFK and still achieve stuff" is not their design goal.

Exactly:
Hello everyone,

This thread was passed onto us from the forum team.

Automation is not permitted in Elite, we class automation as more than one action in game per button press, this includes fleet carrier automation.

If you suspect that automation is being utilised in specific systems, or you think a specific user is using automation, please report that to us here. We can then forward on your report to our anti cheating for them to look into.

Alternatively if you know the commander name of the account you suspect, you can submit an in game report and that will go straight to the anti cheating team.

Why do folks want to play the game without actually playing the game?
Having automated ships you may just as well have instant system jumps like NMS, no thanks.

Sounds a lot like the kind of automation that it already forbidden by the ToS.

Imagine having the real life internet integrated into Elite... a Chatbot that has no clue what it is saying and keeps pulling imagined facts about the game and its content out of its derriere while sounding absolutely confident about the nonsense it spews. Sounds lovely.

There's also the backlash they faced over just using genai for the scientist photos in the JW3 dev build to the point where they took it out and replaced it with non-ai assets.

Fdev have already learned how massively unpopular AI is despite the constant hype of a handful of "tech enthusiasts".

Sure... though I guess you can see how I saw words to the effect of "automated jumping" followed by "its in the works" and came to that conclusion yeah?
Oh I have completely missed that from the OP. It was 4 AM :D

No, nothing of the sorts. Think Voice Attack but with the ability to interpret your commands instead of having to learn the exact phrases.

That's not actually the worst thing, if it really only concerns the input. With those LLM chatbots the issue is more the output, because it is completely unreliable, while sounding absolutely convincing at the same time - they are LLMs after all.

I take well catered stuff I have to learn to engage with like the HCS stuff over a sophisticated chat bot that makes up its answer or pulls it from completely unreliable web sources any day of the week.

So not botting, just "approved botting" 🤭

(I'm just poking, don't want to go down the path of FD's overly-broad EULA today 😀 )

Indeed. There are of course plenty of third party tools already which read the Journal output and do something deterministically useful about it.
