I was in Maia and ran across a degraded emissions USS with threat level 3. I dropped in to take a look. There was one canister that said AI Relic, said illegal in jurisdiction. There were also 6 ships that immediately attacked me. I was in an unarmed passenger dolphin so I couldn't grab the canister. What is an AI Relic?

Some searching suggests that they're just a relatively valuable salvage item. Apparently they're only found in degraded signal sources as bait for pirate ambushes.
Edit: The wiki page has the description and such. There was at least one Reddit post about them from two years ago, so they're definitely rare rather than new.

AI relic is used to activate the alien site from inside. you will also need the unknown probe. to carry these you will need anti corrosive cargo holds from palin.
I have one and the other stuff for the thargoid base if anyone wants to meet me pm me pls
Are you sure it is an AI relic and not the unknown artifact and unknown probe?
I am very curious to see what the AI relic would do at the alien site.

I had the same thing just happen to me in Sirius. First Degraded USS Lvl 3 I've ever seen. Got jumped by the Vultures as well before I scooped.
I ran into basically the same scenario only once before: Somewhere in Col 70 out near Barnard's Loop, back before the USS's were categorized as "Degraded" or whatever else.
Lone AI relic, floating in space, and jump jumped by a swarm of ships when I went to scoop it.

It is an Ambush, that is why they attack you. AI relic will fetch quite a bit of money on the black market. I think in Maia, there is one at Obsidian Orbital. The unknown structures require an unknown artefact for entry to the chambers not an AI relic
AI relics have been in the game for years. If you actually want to get one, go searching in a light ship - the swarm of hostiles that spawn will be scaled down and manageable. If you're in a medium or heavy ship you'll get smashed. Ignore the hostiles, just full power to shields, open your scoop, grab it and go.
You can find them in Bunda, an anarchy system near Founder's World. Fly around in deep space looking for a a USS, I think it's a threat 3 from memory. They are not abundant but neither are they super-rare.

That's the script for that particular event.
There's two variants of this one, one has a few canisters of gold, other has an AI Relic. Both are basically pirate "traps", lure you in with shiny cargo and then open up immediately, even if you have no cargo.
I got a major distaste for dropping out to check out sources like this, as I've had the Gold pirate trap hit me in the first early days of this game. Bunch of Pythons took my Type 6 away from me before I could blink, blindsided me and left a newbie with a very expensive rebuy.

OK, are they different to the Distress Call USS? Last night I dropped into one and was comm'ed "You are here to help ..." but I didn't hang around too long hence wasn't fired upon.
Yes. AI Relic is Degraded Emissions USS Threat 3 like the OP mentioned. Gold one is also degraded emissions iirc, but I forget the threat (possibly 0 or 2, can't remember)
Nothing because this machine doesn't accept anything stored in cargo cannisters.
It's nothing more than a trap from piratey and valuable black market item.
