Discord server for anyone who supports Aisling Duval - invite link

Aisling Duval Discord has finally officially launched!

What is this?
We're a Discord Server dedicated to providing a space for the entire Aisling Duval community to chat both in text chat and in voice comms.

Why Discord?
As a person who's learnt to love Discord through making full of it during the Distant Worlds Expedition, I can proudly claim that it is a great service for the community to use and most powers (except Winters and Hudson it seems) use discord. Personally I think it is very pretty, fun to use and most of all...

You don't need to create an account or download anything to start using it unlike other services.

What do you do on the Discord?

  • We have discussions and give advice to new members about powerplay, ship builds and the various vocations you can pursue in Elite Dangerous.
  • We support roleplay and have a roleplay room catered towards those players called #Medupe-City
  • We support a BGS Operations Group intent on overthrowing unfavourable governments in favour of favourable ones such as COMMUNISM!
  • We have secure Aisling Duval channels that only members who are pledged to aisling will be allowed to use.
  • We have secure imperial channels that only members who are part of an imperial faction are allowed to use.
  • We are connected to the Imperial Discord Network which means you can hop onto other imperial power's discord through ours and say hi.
  • We have a separate channel for explorers Because we know the importance of exploration and want to encourage more to pursue it
  • We have Imperial and Aisling Duval specific announcements that only Imperials or Aisling Duval members can see.

I have a couple more questions, whom can I ask?

You ask me in this thread or in the Discord if you prefer instant messaging.

Alright! How do I get on the Discord?

Here is a handy dandy invitey linky, click through and you're already there!

What kind of rules do I have to follow?

The General Rules are as follows:
1. Be Awesome!
As long as you’re willing to be positive, understanding and constructive, you’re welcome! Shout the name of your power when you enter. :p

2. Be legal!
If you’re younger than 13, you will have to be removed from this service unless you have written permission from your folks.

3. Be Civil!
We're here to make friends and learn about the game that we love so much. If a conversation isn’t constructive or meaningful to you, you should walk away from it.

4. Be Secure!
This means not sharing logs from the secure channels to anyone outside of them. Feel free to do so with the public text channels.

4. Stay on target!
Everything out of topic should be brought to #general-chat, do not spam other channels.

6. No Racism, Gender, Sexual Orientation, and religious persecution!
Treat all those as equally and respectfully as possible. No bashing or talking down on race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion or religious beliefs. The best way for this to not happen to you is to not bring these up. Never forget we're all human beings.

7. No Adult content that highly suggestive and sexual nature!
You’re free to curse, but not to post pornography or conduct adult roleplays except in parody. Maintain guys :p If you’re going to link out to nsfw content, send it via PM.

8. Show your admins some love!
They’re admins, they have to manage a lot of things. Give them a break and listen to them. :)
A full list of rules, regulations and procedures have been written which you can find here: Aisling Duval Discord Rules and Procedures Document

That's all I have to share! See you there!!!

AKA the Black Hand Discord.

Personally, I support the "AD Public Discord" which was setup by the same people who run the Slack/Trello community.

That's not true. It's not the Black Hand Discord because the Black Hand has their own Discord.

Aisling Duval Discord and AD Public discord court different audiences.

We are more community focused, while AD Public Discord functions as a visitors center for The AD Slack.

We have joined together in a declaration of friendship! :)

We're all friendly here.

Please don't make this into yet another one of those Reddit threads. You know exactly the concerns people have when it comes to this, and you know those concerns are widely shared among the AD community. You also know that this kind of reaction was to be expected before you even made the post in the first place. I find your post here, and the subsequent comment to odyss3y misleading for exactly the same reasons repeatedly stated over there, and in the context of the new peace treaty between the Black Hand and the wider AD community, as well as your recent reintroduction to the Slack, I find it unhelpful and tragically timed at best.

Quite a lot of us are putting a genuine effort into making nice with the Black Hand. A lot of work has been put in over quite some time on both sides to make the peace treaty happen. For everyone's sake, please don't do anything further to jeopardise it.

I'm sorry danmac but This isn't Reddit. Please don't treat it like that. I am just sharing something I've set up like any other that is being shared.
I ask you that you please do not hijack this thread to spread negativity just because you personally don't like it or have not found it useful.

The Official Frontier Forums has a positive community.
If you support the Slack, go do something positive and show support for the Slack in its own thread, instead.

"You can do more good supporting the service you prefer than verbally attacking me or what I've created for the community."

I hope you'll understand that, otherwise I can't help you and will not continue replying to you.

Thank you.

Where exactly did he verbally attack you?

Also, this has nothing to do with him not finding Discord set by Black Hand useful, and I'm pretty sure you know that.

Why are people so mad about this, rofl

"I prefer to use a different communications platform from you, therefore I'm going to bash yours and claim mine is better!"

I'm intrigued Olivia, why do you have to have so many rules and regulations?

An incident that I do not believe I am allowed to talk about under moderator's advisement prompted me to write rules that ensured

  1. Accountability,
  2. Meritocracy,
  3. and Transparency
were bred into them.

It is to make sure everyone knows what everyone can do, should do and will ever do and anyone who does not do as written and does not suffer penalties as written can be called out for it quite freely and openly.

It's like two in the morning and I'm not even sure why i'm on the forum right now also peoples' large words and use of literary nuance such as paragraphs is begining to confuse me, but I figured I might as well ask, why are there so many different community hubs for Aisling? I feel like I hear about a new one every week, and I am under the impression that there can't be that many people power-playing (mayhalps I'm wrong, but I do always play in open and I have yet to see another CMDR. ever, really.) so I just don't understand why we have such differentiation and divergence across multimedia platforms... also, which platform should I even use when I eventually find a way to make my launcher work again and can finally play? or, better said, what is the difference between the reddit, and this board, and the slack, and that IRC channel or whatever? or are they all basically the same? I feel afraid that I am committing high treason and making all sorts of enemies in some sort of weird and very tense, dramatic, political novel about intrigue and the balance of power

In an awful fit of irony it would seem that the powerplay in the community behind the powers is more intrigue-ridden than the game mechanic itself is

The Reddit, the Trello, the Slack and Discord attached to it were set up at or near the beginning of PowerPlay and are the primary communications we use; the Slack is for real-time chat, the Reddit is more suited to semi-permanent and longer posts and discussions, the Trello is specifically for objective planning and the Discord is for those times when we need voice. Consider them all different parts of a suite of communications for the community.

The Frontier PowerPlay forums were only added some months after PowerPlay itself started. By the time they came in were we using the other stuff, which is why there's not much traffic here.

The newer Discord mentioned in the original post is run by the Black Hand. Olivia can probably tell you more about it; I'm not a user of it.

I didn't realise there was an Aisling Duval IRC. Can you post a link to it?

There are several reasons for why there are so many different community hubs for Aisling.

1. Different players like to use different tools to communicate.
There are a few I know of, The Frontier Forums, the Subreddit, Discord, Slack, IRC(like you said), there may even be other aisling communities that exist elsewhere using skype and what's app.
A person gets used to a certain way a thing works and prefers to use it. That's not to say a player can't use more than one and often do.

I for one am both on AD Slack, and Aisling Duval Discord but use them in slightly different ways, which brings me to the second reason:

2. Different tools are used for different things
Different tools have different features that encourage different uses.

Aisling Duval Powerplay operations are mostly conducted on the AD-slack, and Slack as a platform is uniquely qualified for teamwork and cooperation because of a number of features such as message and file pinning, a robust message search system, file embedding, no ignore user feature others because we're all in the same team, choosing which channel you wish to be apart of, etc.

Aisling Duval Discord was made towards broader community goals and thus is more publically accessible and relaxed. Anyone can join, but only aisling pledged can have access to secure rooms. A lot of Elite communities already use Discord and it continues to grow in popularity.

feature-wise, it has a robust roles and access hierarchy. text and voice access and permissions control, file embedding, and an ignore feature, social features Discord was uniquely made to support gaming communities as opposed to structured team based activities. And it's currently updating with loads of new features every two or three weeks, it seems.

Now I don't think I have to tell you about IRC. IRC has been the bread and butter of internet communities since time immemorial. It's simple, fast, and it's proven technology. There are loads of ways to get onto IRC and the Fuel Rats primarily use it for their operations.

Reddit is a great community service that allows people to comment on each other's comment in comment trees and the community to up or down vote them based, hopefuly but not always by redditquette.

Like a forum, it's not instant messaging so it take a lot longer to think about your response and could lead to better worded comments. However I think without proper moderation and adherence to redditquette, a person's experience across different subreddits will differ wildly.

Frontier Forums is a message board with profile, PMs, a powerful but perhaps archaic thread and comment search feature, and the ability to "upvote" but not downvote.

Because it is the official community, it is heavily moderated towards a standard of rules and it is very developed in how it handles offenses using a points system.

3. Visibility
If other players don't know about you they won't know to join and may consider forming their own. That's why Aisling Duval is linked here and in other Elite Dangerous Discords such as Elite Imperials and /r/Elite Dangerous and these forums. We want to tell people, hey! we exist! come check us out! :D
TLDR: 3 reasons, People flock together for different reasons and may prefer using one tool over another. Some aren't aware there's a choice.

I feel afraid that I am committing high treason and making all sorts of enemies in some sort of weird and very tense, dramatic, political novel about intrigue and the balance of power

In an awful fit of irony it would seem that the powerplay in the community behind the powers is more intrigue-ridden than the game mechanic itself is
Edit 1: XD that's part of what makes "social play" interesting. In the end, I believe that we're all part of the Aisling Duval Community no matter which tool we use and should try to interact with each other from that perspective. There will always be people who'll like to think things in terms of black and white like "Are you with us or against us?" kinda ethos.

So have a gander around and talk to a few people; come and check us out ;)
Join uss~ we have cookiessss~ Aisling Duval Discord instant invite

Even if you don't stay, thanks for having a look!

btw, Cori
It's not run by the black hand. Aisling Duval Discord is run by me. :p
If what you say is considered true then AD Slack is run by the Pileus Libertas and the reddit by Aisling Angels and perhaps I should start describing them that way but what does that tell us? How is it helpful

This kind of simplified description is misleading and unhelpful. It would be more helpful if we describe things by what they provide, can do for us and how they're managed instead of who created them.

Actually, Slack was created by Dinusty, which isn't a member of any group, and there are two admins from PL, one admin from SD and one independent admin.

That's kind of my point Tataboj:

Anyways, that's all i meant to say. Let's not broach this topic any further.

So a lot has happened that I haven't touched on since.

The main thing for those here is that I no longer run Aisling Duval Discord and hadn't run Aisling Duval Discord since late June.

Why isn't so much important but the broad strokes of it were that I thought I could do better with ownership as well (be making a new thread for it soon).

That said, Aisling Duval Discord is still running if not by me though I do not know the state of that discord.

If the new admins would like to make a post of their Discord, I'd urged them to make a new thread as I'm unsure if I can transfer ownership of threads to you. Until then I will request mods lock the thread.
