Alec's Elite: Dangerous Advent Calendar (3310)

DAY 14 - I rolled a DBX down the side of a 33km deep crater and it took 14 min's to hit the bottom and stop!

This is where my obsession with the giant craters on Callisto in the Sol system began. Basically @HappyRogger reported here on the forum about a 30-40km deep crater on Callisto and since I'd been struggling to find mountains much more then 9-10km high in Odyssey I just suddenly thought, 30km? that's VAST! I wonder how long it would take for a ship to fall all the way to the bottom?

DAY 15 - Alec's "hurling SRVs down a giant crater" challenge.

The Callisto crater continues to hold my attention and, having tossed a ship down it, I'm now thinking about SRVs. My original plan was to tip as many SRVs as I could off the side and then just observe the glorious ballet unfold as they all start tumbling to the bottom. However I discover that, although a big ship can carry a great many SRVs, the game only allows us to have four deployed at a time. Undeterred I go with four and then discover that following them down is not as easy as you might think, in fact it's something of challenge!

DAY 16 - Thargoid Titan Attack Guide : The Movie

Apologies for the slight break in chronological order here but I felt it was important to get this one out before it's too late.

In May 3310, along with many other people I decided to post my own guide to the fairly complex process of attacking a Thargoid Titan, something a great many commanders are now heavily engaged with as we combat the last remaining Titan ("Cocijo") which is currently in orbit over planet Earth. Originally my guide took the form of a single image ..

.. but I subsequently decided to turn that into a video featuring a complete Titan attack run along with a bunch of additional hints and tips. If you haven't yet visited a Titan, it's not too late (although with three hearts remaining at the time of writing it seems the end may well be in sight now).

DAY 17 - King of Snake (a true master of the SRV runs the toughest SRV challenge in the galaxy).

It's a shame that current events will probably eclipse today's video because it's perhaps the best video I made all year.

I'd been back in legacy Horizons because I wanted to convert three of my all-time favourite long distance SRV race courses (all set on Kumay in the Chi Herculis system) into time trials for EDCoPilot. I'd already done "Chimney Stacks" and "Launch Pad" but was saving the best ("The Kumay Snake") for last.

Rather than do the usual 1st person view of this course what I really wanted was to follow someone else in a camera ship. And really, there's no finer driver of the SRV than Cmdr Sgurr (who once did a complete circumnavigation of the legendary Pomeche 2C). So we arranged a date and then waited patiently for dawn to break on this astonishingly beautiful planet.

This is what happened next!

DAY 18 - Elite Dangerous Odyssey - 100 desktop backgrounds

Mid March 3310 and I randomly happen to notice that I have over 100 carefully selected Elite Dangerous screenshots sitting in the folder I cycle through for my Windows desktop backgrounds and decide to turn them into a video slideshow.

What I did not expect is that the idea takes off in the wider community and "100 screenshots" becomes a thing. I've attempted to gather all the videos I'm aware of in a single playlist which you can find below. Contributors are:

DAY 19 - Elite Racers Winter Olympics 3310: SRV Tower Climb highlights

Between 3rd of February and 28th April 3310 @TobiasVonBrandt and @sgurr of the Elite Racers ran the CCCXLVI Winter Olympic Games, a series of live race events (i.e. not time trials) featuring on-foot, SRV and ship based head-to-head racing. This video showcases the SRV Tower Climbing from the 23rd March.

Event 10: SRV Tower Climb - final results
🥇 Sgurr
🥈 Shaye Blackwood
🥉 Alec Turner

While making no promises I would add that the Elite Racers are hoping to run a similar series of live race events next year. If you're interested in taking part then come along to the Elite Racers discord server to find out more. I would also add (copied from the video description) - don't worry if this seems beyond your current abilities. A lot of the drivers shown here weren't able to do this a week before the event but the group are more than happy to help and everyone involved was getting to the top of the tower by the end.

DAY 20 - Racing to the bar at 330 mph (a new SRV time trial)

One thing I did a LOT of in the middle of 3310 was work on some new SRV time trials for EDCoPilot, focused on racing the SRV to tourist settlement bars from starting points around 50km away. Criteria for these was a) the aforementioned tourist settlement finish line, b) challenging terrain and c) a tidally locked planet providing at least semi-perma-day lighting conditions. In the end I created two, one ("The Valentino's Bar Dash") under the deep red dusk of Obato B 5 (more on that tomorrow) and one ("The Spark's Voyage Bar Dash") through the glorious yellow dawn of LHS 3923 A 3.

This video shows an early demonstration run on the latter.

In posting this, while not wishing to undervalue the achievements of everyone who's been giving this a go, I'd particularly like to shoutout Cmdr Sulu (@Fish172) and Cmdr Duck0 (@duck0), who's abilities in the SRV have improved massively this year, especially Duck0 who has been giving the old pro's a real run for their money, pushing us to new limits across the entire span of the EDCoPilot leaderboards.

DAY 21 - Valentino's Dusk Run - exterior footage of some SRV time trialing

Featuring the second of the two "Bar Dash" SRV time trials I mentioned yesterday, this video takes place en route to "Valentino's Bar" on Obato B 5.

Zrpn86T.png

As you can see from the aerial view we have much more of a dusk like feel here and the course vaguely follows a deep canyon which provides an interesting challenge to the driver - do you follow its contours or attempt to power straight across it.

Two other notable things:
1) Unlike the earlier "Kumay Snake" video, this time it's me driving and Sgurr filming.
2) This video was made a month before The Cure released their first studio album in 16 years so I was deep into a period of listening to nothing but Cure songs at the time. The tempo of the song meant that, for a change, this video was NOT sped up (unlike most of my others) but in this case I think it works rather well.

DAY 22 - "Platformer" - Spire platform jumping, 11000 ft up!

Revisiting an earlier theme I'm back at one of the Thargoid Spire sites for some more platform jumping. This Spire is inactive (as are they all now) but luckily these incredible locations still remain as a reminder of the Thargoid war and also as playgrounds for stunts like this.

This particular stunt was inspired by a bounty on the JustAbout.com website and won me a $40 reward which I fed straight back into the game buy spending it on ARX.

DAY 23 - Mandalayaanisqatsi Redux: Solid Wings

it's October 2024 and a preview build of the Mandalay has just been made available to the Frontier partner program. I decide to take mine back to that massive crater on Callisto (you know, the one I tipped a DBX and a load of SRV's into). I drop it down the side and make a shocking discovery, its beautiful wings aren't solid and pass straight through the ground! Despite that the video gets quite a lot of views and I'm assuming Frontier see it because when the ship finally goes on general release they've fixed it and I get to make the video I originally intended.

Source: https://youtu.be/Gh_lUyYUCDE?list=PLSeEFsl5MwqTePA7X6dVg-vluHVXRBj6P

One thing I love about this is that several people have commented that it's strangely fascinating and they found themselves watching the entire video without really knowing why. 😆

DAY 24 - Mandalay is the Buckyball GOAT!

A small amount of flight testing, especially in supercruise, and it quickly becomes apparent that the new Mandalay is not just a looker with an impressive jump range but is also a fast and extremely manoeuvrable ship. Although it won’t officially be allowed to compete until it’s available for credits I decide to run it round the latest Buckyball Race ("Once Upon A Time In Leesti") to see how it compares. Holy hell … it's an absolute beast! In my very first attempt I beat my personal best by about two minutes and am a minute faster than the current top time. I predict that this ship is going to dominate the leaderboards next year (thank god we have a rule that if you finish in the top five then you're not allowed to have that ship back in the top five for the rest of the season). The question will be … which of the eight races will you choose to play your "Mandalay Joker" on?

DAY 25 - The Last Thargoid Spire

Ho ho ho, and what better way to celebrate the festive season than, errr, a fly around what was the last active Thargoid Spire site. Errr, yeah …sorry, probably should have planned that better. Anyway, Merry Christmas, war is over and all that jazz. Have a good one commanders, can't wait to see what 3311 brings.
