ON that note the recently found abandoned settlement is called "Orion's Folly", I'm guessing Orion is the guy's name.

The story titled "Missed Target".

As mentioned previously it's Col 285 Sector UZ-O C6-9 ( -87.1, -10.6 )

Can't help feeling it might be nice to catalogue these.

I think the ship's name is Orion as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)

Haven't found a candidate world yet - odds on it's not here - just a bit of flavour.... but...
I and many others spent years in original Elite looking for generation ships , rock hermits (and if you had tape version on BBC ELecton - Asteroids :)) etc that weren't there - the fabled and rumoured generation ships were once said to be in the 8 bit MSX version (which supposedly got things even the Amiga\ST and pc did not). This time we have a base and a message from a crewman - the Orion probably isn't in game - but I've been looking for her for 22 years... she will be found, she must be found.......

Personally i would look for the nearest earth like? Im pretty sure that would be the target would it not?

Im not online otherwise id join the peeps out there

Or....he made it out of the planets orbit but he didnt jump (they didnt have fsd then yes?) out of the system....he just headed that way

So from the base maybe we need to find the blue star he refers to jump to SC and head that way; maybe it will be thousaands of ls out? And look for USSs?

It's bizarre isn't it.

I mean I remember sleeping over at a friends house, he had Elite on the BBC.

In our sleeping bags I was reading the Dark Wheel and hit on a piece of text which implied Kraits could be found in anachy systems (we'd never seen a Krait, actually they weren't even in the BBC version).

So next morning with great exicitement we went to a candidate system (I had to let him press the jump button because it was his game).

Of course no Kraits were seen!

Yes it reminds me very much of the Alien mysteries.

No he uses terminology for liquid fuels, we know the generation ships had no jump capabilities so yes you are correct.

We dont know if he refered to a Sun or a plant. Personally I would guess Planet... Earth is Blue ETC.

We dont know how long ago he left however if its anything like the Voyager probe then its likely at the very edge of the system...though it may have been moving faster than Voyager...it got over a 100lyrs from Sol in a around a 1000 yrs or more, Voyager had longer and is still technically in SOL system.

Needle meet the biggest haystack ever lol

Those generation ships never existed in the original elite. One hopes they do here but I doubt these breadcrumbs lead to one.

Yes, that's my point - they weren't there - yet we went looking for them anyway :)

At least here - they might exist... one day, today ?

One day, far in the future, one of these trails will lead somewhere.

We must be prepared for this day!

Putting on my story hat for a moment the sharp eyed amongst you have noticed a story in GalNet about ‘The Missing’. In brief The Missing is an encompassing term for everyone who has disappeared without trace in deep space. This includes colonists on the ancient generation ships, lost colonies, disappeared scientific expeditions and a host of others. Some will know from our timeline that many thousands of ‘generation ships’ left the safety of Earth beginning in the 24th century onwards, and headed out into what was then largely unknown – with just some data from probes to guide them. The process was completely unregulated, and many were not as well prepared as they should have been. In those days when faster-than-light communication didn’t exist, many of these potential settlers faced terrible risks alone, travelling thousands of light years into the black, not unlike the wagon trains that set out across continental US in the 18th and 19th centuries before them. Not all were successful at founding new worlds. Most were not. Some managed to return with tails of their adventures. Some were lost in deep space, the dead hulk of their ship carrying on an almost endless trajectory ever deeper into space. Others managed to land and survived for many decades before being overtaken by some local disaster. Some may still be alive, just restricted to low power light speed communications, or no comms at all, as their equipment has failed over the centuries in between. We say they have disappeared without trace, but just maybe some will find some traces of them that are still out there…

The plight of The Missing is just one of the things that will become more prominent over the coming year and the Commanders of the Pilots Federation will be pivotal in solving these mysteries. You can expect more news on this soon!

Thanks
