Do we know how fast the ships could go? for us to move between Col and Hip for example is 1 year aprox so how old is this sight might give us an idea to how far they might have gotten.

Matter-antimatter anihillation rockets (now don't we need them in game ? ;) ) in theory get you to between 50 and 80% light speed - most other methods only about 10% - you accelerate all the way out to target and perhaps use a solar sail to slow down in system - would essentially be like riding a bullet fired from a gun - no way to adjust course in flight probably. See my earlier link on Project Orion - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)

It is possible the generation ship is in orbit around the destination world, if it was not designed to re-enter an atmosphere (heat shields and the hull strength needed to survive re-entry are heavy!) but instead carried a shuttle or drop pods.

Edit: in fact, given that the colonists ended up in a different world and were able to restart the trip (why would a ship meant for a one-way trip have boosters strong enough to get back into space?) I think the shuttle theory makes a lot of sense. I'm expecting the final find will be a persistent space PoI.

You wouldnt use your nuke propulsion to land - probably conventional chem rockest - so with more fuel you could perhaps get off from a low gravity spot like the moon this base is on - then fire up the nuke drive again when lined up on the target.

Now if our brave pilot can get 80% light speed and he abandoned the base we found 20 - 25 years ago - then the ship is 16 to 20 lyrs out now.
lots of supposition .. but hey we can dream :)

Oh and we have concept art of underwater bases - so no reason a water world might not be the target - might even be prefereable .

Gents iam right above Orions Folly and i can hear starnge sounds. Actually there is a repeating faint sound (not sure how to described it) with clearly a begi ing and an end, near the structure which doesnt appear to touch the ground? I mean its the structure that looks like its a lot of junk just levitating near the middle of the outpost (cant record sorry not sure if someone want to do it)

In no place they mention multiple ships like generation ship+lander. They had a voyage on a ship which should land on an Earth-like world (stated exactly as that). So either they land with a generation ship or it's something completely different. Or maybe a fore guard for a generation ship?

On one hand a generation ship is required to have somebody alive on board when it arrives. On the other hand generation ships are huge and impossible to design for proper aerodynamics - these would not be able to withstand the stress of an atmospehric landing. Here is an artwork about them (through the link someone posted earlier). A structure like this would break up and go down in flames.

I know the thing you mean - looks like some sort of dock\scaffold affair.

Be nice if we could find graves for the dead crew - might have dates - would let us know when base was last in use.
Sadly I think we are looking for something that isn't there (at least yet) - but, I'll stay in the general area for a bit.

All those searching for the second Alien ruins on and around COL 173 Sector KY-Q D5-47 14, what are your current strategies for surveying the surfaces of the moons 14I and 14J? I'm on 14I currently. Do we know anything about the terrain the site may be on, landmarks, craters, mountains, canyons, or what side of the planets it might be on?

Is it really just a blind search of the thousands of kilometers of surface?

I aim for a big big crater and then fly from there to the small craters / flat ground around.

If we go by the picture we have, then it's not in a crater, looks reasonably flat with no mountains in view, which could mean almost anywhere. There is light with shadows that are not long, so if the place you are looking never sees the sun you could be wasting your time..
.
I'm lining up Barnard's loop with the horizon as in the picture we have. I then wait for the planet to move (2 hours+) to get an idea how and where it moves in relation with Barnard's Loop. I then move to the new location lining up Barnard's Loop. I then have a rough trajectory to work with to go further. I'm flying at between 5 and 10 km and using the external camera.
.
I'm noticing more square features than before that turn out to be nothing or shadows.
.
I will get round to starting from a feature like a big crater and heading for another feature like double craters.
.
I'm also in the private group Mobius, so I'm interested to hear that there are other people searching these moons (currently on 14J) but I've never seen anyone at all.
.

I don't really like hints from FDev too much, but I would like to know if there is more to these abandoned settlement stories. It would be awesome if there was more to it, I am just worried that what we found is the end.

So how was this thing/pile of junk, created there levitating like that? Some sort of a magnetic field attracting metalic items (and maybe generates sounds?)

He did mention he was "repairing the ship".....and all that junk look like repair leftovers to me...

Regarding the possible "Missing" base on COL 285 SECTOR UZ-O C6-9, I found an ELW orbiting a slightly bluish white A-star in system HR 540, about 72ly from the base site.

Couldn't find anything interesting around the ELW, just a bunch of normal random USS signals. There are two landables in the system, didn't see anything unusual around them either.

I think you are looking too much into it. Its a graphical bug.

An ELW in an A-star system is unusual though.

Yep. I figured in the log where he says "i keep looking up at that big blue ball in the sky" he wasn't looking at the ELW itself, but a bluish star that the ELW is orbiting, so I searched a couple dozen blue colored stars around the base and this is the first ELW I've found orbiting one.

You'll probably be able to land there and solve the mystery once atmospheric landings on ELWs are in the game. In 5.0 or 6.0 or thereabouts, give it five or six years. ;-)

But hey, blu lazorz.
