Do we know how fast the ships could go? for us to move between Col and Hip for example is 1 year aprox so how old is this sight might give us an idea to how far they might have gotten.
Matter-antimatter anihillation rockets (now don't we need them in game ?

It is possible the generation ship is in orbit around the destination world, if it was not designed to re-enter an atmosphere (heat shields and the hull strength needed to survive re-entry are heavy!) but instead carried a shuttle or drop pods.
Edit: in fact, given that the colonists ended up in a different world and were able to restart the trip (why would a ship meant for a one-way trip have boosters strong enough to get back into space?) I think the shuttle theory makes a lot of sense. I'm expecting the final find will be a persistent space PoI.
You wouldnt use your nuke propulsion to land - probably conventional chem rockest - so with more fuel you could perhaps get off from a low gravity spot like the moon this base is on - then fire up the nuke drive again when lined up on the target.
Now if our brave pilot can get 80% light speed and he abandoned the base we found 20 - 25 years ago - then the ship is 16 to 20 lyrs out now.
lots of supposition .. but hey we can dream
Oh and we have concept art of underwater bases - so no reason a water world might not be the target - might even be prefereable .
