Alien archeology and other mysteries: Thread 9 - The Canonn

I doubt we will ever know but I suspect that one, and only one of the following is true..

1) We missed something regarding the math on site placement, and there is a formula that would have shown us a path from site to site.
2) The sites were always meant to be visible on scan < 1000 ls.

What would be really nice, and I am looking to you Mr Brookes, is when this is all in the past and we are well into season 3, battling for survival against some as yet unknown foe, can we get a nostalgic look back at how this should have played out, just how this was meant to be solved?

Here's how I'm looking for ruins in systems:

  1. Navigate area using 'Not Visited' filter and 'Economic' routing for maximum hoppage (I often clear areas)
  2. Honk new system, check Navigation panel as it shows ruins within 1000ls
  3. Look at System Map
    • Ruins are on landable planets (duh!) with a radius between 1000 and 2500km
    • Often in systems with multiple stars (only 4 ruin planets in single-star systems)
    • Often tidally locked (46 out of 53 planets), which you can see on System Map
    • Planets are beige :), so no ice planets (there are 35 High Metal Content, 18 Rocky)
  4. If there are remote suns that look promising then target and point ship at them - ruins will show this way from across a system (way more than 1000ls). Same with planets that look likely but are > 1000ls away (though if there 2-3k ls away I'll tend to visit)

I think that's it - anyone have any variations? Obviously this routine is self-selecting so I won't find very dissimilar locations, but I haven't come across a new discovery that I had previously 'missed' yet.

There are other things that are common for ruin locations (temp between 180 & 305, gravity 0.12-0.4), but you need to scan the planet to find that, and by then you've had to visit them, so they've shown in the Nav panel anyway.

Now I just need to work on how to find candidate systems :)

People did that when the ruins were first discovered (I'm sure people have tried scanning with Bio-waste by now!)

On point 4 it's actually better not to target the distant objects, just point the ship at them without selecting them as targets.

Posted about effect of new beta in the Beta forum for those who want to know. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/332814-Ancient-Ruins-updates?p=5235797#post5235797

Please discuss in that forum to avoid annoying those who don't want to know :)

Seriously? those who don't want to know? - this is not a spoiler!

There are people flying around today looking for new ruins sites, then flying down and looking at them from above to figure out if they are looking at a Beta1 or Beta2 or ... - but in a few weeks all the sites are getting shuffled again - so today it's a Beta1, but on 2.3 go live it might be a Beta4 - who knows!

To anyone looking for new ruins sites - good news!! you don't have to bother figuring out what variation it is - just log it as Alpha, Beta or Gamma - then move on to the next one.

When 2.3 drops it's going to be all hands on deck re-cataloguing ALL the ruins sites.

We may be jumping the gun - what happens in Beta doesn't always get released but given that the original site layout changed without any reason when 2.2 dropped then it is quite possible that it will happen again.

I pity the fools still trying to complete this in Solo ;)

[up] I was just thinking that this info should go here. Looks like ruins are in same places, site type is the same, variations are new (i.e. not the known variations). Of course we have not rechecked all sites.

Although this is huge news, please keep it all over in the beta ruins thread, and not here. Or kittens will get slaughtered.

I don't actually agree with that - of course spoilers should stay in the beta thread - but this piece of info is not a spoiler.

Think on this:
Between the 26th of Oct 2016 and the 10th of Jan 2017 many cmdrs spend many hours and days (or longer) trying to figure out the mystery of the ruins.
We tried using the only tools ED has - scan it or shoot it, when that did nothing we started looking for codes, astral maps, tricks with stars and moons and shadows, clever diagrams with overlays and even specially written 3d models.
During that whole time FDev sat back in silence.
So after almost 3 months, what was the end result of all those theories and tests etc ?
The result was nothing, 0, Nadda, zilch, because the 'code' to make the scans possible wasn't turned on yet, AND FDEV NEVER TOLD US! ( I assume because they found a problem with it so just never enabled it until 2.2.03 was released )
Then came Ram Tah and the mission and scans and the catalogue of other bugs, most of which ( hopefully ) will be fixed in the 2.3.

So I guess with this news, the search for the last missing data points in Solo is now postponed until 2.3?

I guess I will have to wait for new site obelisk layout screenies after the patch to redo the Interactive Map, hopefully without a change in cluster numbering.

Aren't those bugs exclusive to consoles? I've never seen a floating or submerged obelisk on Windows

I saw one floating yesterday. Windows 64 but with i2500k and GTX 1080

Thanks for the answer.
Are the artifacts themselves being scanned? Hmm.

As far as I understand, the tanks corrode the hold. Those. A special reserved special hold to transport these containers?
( I do not remember the engineer who has it )

P.S. But I'm not very sure of the shape of the ship? You can scan both the cargo, and the ship, and if the ship has armament ...

Palin. Corrosive Reistent (comes in 2T capacity I believe). Not sure if you can buy them if you haven't unlocked him as I already have)

Unknown artefacts cause corrosive module damage. Unknown fragments do not.

Professor Plain in Maia, sells corrosion resistant cargo racks. You need an invite though.

Well disregard my previous comment above

The longer this all draws out, the more it makes me cringe.

Over 100 sites found now since they started appearing within 1,000Ls of scanners, and still no complete solution in Solo, *and* it's likely we never would've even found most of those were it not for the Open/PG bug which allowed Noodlz to get all 101 scans and unlock that ability. And to top it all off, the so-called "+" sites which are essentially just bugged sites which require a relog to get more obelisks lighting up, but still not enough to complete it.

Utterly disappointing conclusion for an activity that could've been so much better.

I take noodlez turning in the 101 (using the bug) as their in universe way of justifying the change.

Otherwise it may have come a little later as message from Ram Tah saying he found something in the data we already have and now has modified our scanners to compensate.

Yay!

Found new Ruins system: Col 173 Sector OZ-U b33-6 :)

Checking the sites now & submitting to Canonn- New Guardian Ruins Report site.

2xAlpha + 1xGamma.

Wow. Never seen this thread so quiet.

Everyone burnt out, playing beta, avoiding thread because of ruins spam or just disillusioned by all the bugged mysteries?

Since losing my 62M credits I've taken a break to check out other aspects of the Beta. Planning to go back over there at some point soon to check out the new layouts and behaviour. Not bothering to do the whole thing proper again until 2.3 goes live.

Yup, almost 18hs with no posts. I guess is the lack of answers from the Devs, the bugs, beta that make everyone trying other things in game or other games. Im way too dissapointed with the alien ruins thingy. And to be honest even if they fix it in the 2.3 wont even bother to do the 101 scans again.

I'm still searching for ruins. Thread's quiet since someone evicted the WLTM crowd - that was hiding the slowdown for the last week or so :)
