Alien Colonial Marines better xeno's

Warning the game is not worth full retail price

Yeah I know I shouldn't have bought it, but I'm a sucker for the Aliens franchise and I got it in a sale.

Anyway.

One of the worst things about ACM is the rubbish aliens that run straight at you and die with no variation whatsoever. An enterprising modder over at the mod-db found a single spelling mistake in the games ini file that was preventing the xeno's from using any of their programmed in behaviors hence them just running at your gun.

Remove the extraneous "a" and suddenly they take cover, approach behind cover then jump over it at close range, nip over the side of walkways and approach underneath, jump between ceiling and floor and run down the walls to evade your fire. In short they git-gud at trying to rip your face off.

Instructions :

Inside your games config file (My Document\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config\PecanEngine.ini) is the following line of code :

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather

I've highlighted the spelling mistake by making it big, remove the offending "a" in any text editor so it reads like this :

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTether

The difference is huge and immediately noticeable. The game still downloads with the spelling mistake, you have to change it yourself.

O'Niel is still a pain in the bum.

Yep a real missed opportunity for a great game. It's a wonder that they gimped it like they did.

I still occasionally watch the Angry Joe review of it. So funny. He got properly angry about it.

Angry Joe's reviews are excellent, he seems to view and rate games almost exactly the way I do. Anything he recommends is always worth buying, and the opposite is true.

You can see the potential in ACM in things like the graphical loyalty to the films, but it's buried under so much dumb rubbish it can be really hard to spot. It's genuinely improved by the fix I posted, the whole feel of the game changes. I'd say it becomes not bad rather than utter tripe (fanboy bias warning). I'm amazed a spelling mistake in the ini went unnoticed this long, had such an effect on the game and that they shipped it with the xeno's effectively not working anywhere near the way they'd been coded.

Massive potential and lots of hard work ruined by a lazy broken cash grab pushed out before it was ready and then subsequently ignored after underperforming in the eye's of the people who broke it.

It's just stupid really stupid. They had the chance to spawn a whole new franchise from the ashes of the old one and all it would have taken was a half decent team that had an eye for quality and detail.

Instead the franchise is dead in the water.

Interesting. Might redownload for a revisit when I get some decent 'net. Im just coming to the end of an alien isolation playthrough

You'd think they'd release a tiny patch to fix this once they'd become aware of it.... Lol

I do love Aliens. But I prefer to play as them.

We need a new AvP game, because the old new one is dead. And I miss biting people's heads off because they don't ever look up. :D

...sadly it's not just the 'games'.

True.

There was a plan to ditch everything recent and let the bloke who did district 9 do a direct sequel to aliens with Ripley Hicks and Newt.

Ripley in an asylum Hicks in military prison and newt in a home for wayward girls (to shut them up) on earth when the aliens get accidentally released from a government lab there, and chaos ensues in the vast dystopian metropolis earth has become. There were some comic books along the same lines decades ago.

Instead James Cameron did his own version of the first three star wars films or the Hobbit film trilogy.

Game over man.

They actually wanted to turn Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum and Earth War into movies? Damn, that is a missed opportunity indeed. :(

It was Ridley Scott's fault this time, James Cameron is busy ruining other stuff

Lol, what's going on with people who used to be good at stuff.

How the heck did that go through QA before release?

Is it worth installing?

Skim reading I'd guess. The worst part is spellcheck finds it, I noticed when I made the edit.

If you already own it, give it a bash they are genuinely better. But do not buy it on the strength of this fix, everything else that was wrong with it is still just as bad.

No, i mean QA as in playtesting and no-one at the company realized that their AI did not act the way it should?

They probably did, then made everyone check thousands of lines of code but never assigned anyone to quickly go over the ini file.

Sometimes problems are so simple people think they just can't exist and don't look, like assuming somethings broken without checking the wall socket is actually supplying power.

I think you give them too much credit. NOTHING in this game is the way it was promised, and actually showed before release. Gameplay in those demos is from a totally different game. They lied. They knew they are making a turd. They deserve to burn in hell.

I'm a proper big old fan of the alien stuff and even I think that's a wee bit OTT.

Their trailer was higher res than the initially released game, but did show gameplay stuff (even if it made no sense). Not a big deal for me as I think taking advertising literally is a mugs game. They also eventually patched it back up to a similar level of detail.

It's a shoddy game sure, but that's not exactly a capital crime. There are much worse movie franchise cash grabs out there.

Ahhhh, Alien Isolation, now that is a real Aliens game! :)

And most surprisingly - from studio like Creative Assembly. They've created more Total War games than most other studios games in total :D They've never even been anywhere near the genre, and suddenly they produce pretty much the best Alien game.
