Alien Colonial Marines better xeno's

The game has full 4 player campaign coop, right? I'm strongly leaning towards giving it a playthrough. If the Xeno fix plus some mods and patches can bring it up from "broken/terrible" all the way up to "mediocre by-the-numbers shooter" I'll probably be able to bridge the rest of that gap with franchise nostalgia and coop play.

Yep it does.

However, there are still the issues with story and broken mechanics (looking at you motion tracker) you'll have to contend with.

Probably better getting the colonial marines ArmA 3 mod and pairing it with the new Xenomorph mod

The Colonial Marines Mod has been around since ArmA 2 (although you could argue Operation Flashpoints mod by Die Bastler also counted).

The Xenomorph mod has recently dropped. Its... most impressiven

I was idly wondering if the dreadful overused mercenaries that take up so much of ACM feature in it as heavily as they do due to the broken xeno AI at release, rewriting it to make less use of xeno's could also explain the crappy storyline.
