I tend to do a lot of settlement raiding as the scenarios tend to play out more varied than typical pirate massacre missions, so I often end up doing a lot more Odyssey missions than the actual ship missions. This brings up an interesting dilemma when it comes to maxing out materials, engineers, and engineering, as I've pretty much maxed out the Odyssey "on-foot" side of engineering, both for my suits and weapons, yet I still have to do the rather tedious material farming for the ship side of things. Most of the payouts for some of the non-hazardous ship missions, however, don't give as high-grade a material as I hope it would be, especially when it's something like a courier mission or something that doesn't require a fully kitted out ship (i.e. fully engineered).
Since Odyssey "on-foot materials" have a substantially lower cap than "ship materials", it would make sense that we should be able to trade goods and data for manufactured materials and encoded materials respectively...and vice versa. This would solve the issue of some people enjoying certain gameplay loops over others, while still having the means to acquire the necessary materials to be able to make other game loops much more tolerable (such as gaining the enough materials to unlock particular engineers/upgrades), and would lessen the need to needlessly grind in areas like Dav's Hope.
