Almost own my ASP.

So when I bought the game my intention has always been to explore the Galaxy.
So after getting a firm grasp on the mechanics of the game I decided I was going to be a trader and save up for a ship and a trip out into the darkness.

I got myself a Hauler asap, worked my way up to the Type 6 and now I am right at the cusp of having enough for the Asp. Of course, I have a lot to go to get it outfitted, but as I get to this point I have questions.

I haven't decided on a destination out there yet and I wonder, is there a way to see if others have explored a place before I go there? Not that I won't be going to places people might have already explored. I fully intend to see some of the nebula's and whatnot out there that I am sure people have been to, but I do hope to discover some stars and planets myself and put my name on them along the way.

Are there markers for systems that you have discovered that you can highlight on the map? If not I intend to keep track of them myself as I go.

I think I have more, but I am trying to play at the same time here. :)

Thanks in advance guys.
Also, thank you to those whom helped me get up on my feet here in the forums. Also got a lot of knowledge out of the streamers out there too. :)

EDIT: Side note, I intend to own every ship in the game at some point too. My current goal however is to get lost out there for a long, long while.

As i found out most of the nearby nebula's are already done and dusted. By no means do I regret going to one, it was amazing to think this is what a nebula could be like (rather than the pea-soup most sci-fi tv shows depict it as). And even my short jaunt to the California Neb netted me 1.4mil :D

Another suggestion I have read is to show the galaxy map with star types and then turn off all but the "Non Sequence Stars" so you will find things like neutron stars and white dwarfs etc.

CMDR Grawbad, I have a question for someone like you who likes to explore but can't quite afford an Asp yet, so is using cheaper ships. You mentioned you went from hauler to t6. What made you skip the adder? Or do you only intend to explore in an Asp?

The asp is pretty expensive if you're still saving up for it and want to get out there I'd take a cobra. You need to have a detailed surface scanner, advanced discovery scanner, field maintenance unit, best FSD, big fuel scoop, ect.
the cobra is fast and cheap with a great jump range. Debug camera removes the need for a high visibility cockpit.
if you want to get out there and lost for a while on the cheap the cobra does that in stride.

Not in game. Check out EDDiscovery a tool made by CMDR Finwen which:

* The program parses the netlog to give your travel history.
* Star names with blue color are unmapped without position.
* You can add distances between the stars to get a travel log with distances
* You can add a note to a stare to remember something special.
* It has a 3d star map. Shows stars with coordinates from EDStarcoordinator. Stars in red are the ones you have traveled to.

I wish I'd been able to start using it before I started exploring. Highly recommended!

While the Asp is hands-down the best explorer ship (unless you can splurge 150M+ for an Anaconda), the Cobra, the Hauler and the Type 6 are no slouches either when it comes to exploring.

Add the Adder to that list as well, great little explorer ship. It was exploring in my Adder that more than paid for the cost of fully kitted out Asp.

@smartroad I will take that info into account. Yeah, I want to go to Horsehead nebula, and I am sure its been done a thousand times over, but I am still going.

@puca. Well, the hauler was cheaper, and once I upgraded it to full capacity, it seemed silly for me to go from 22t to 26t with the adder and I got enough credits in a very short amount of time to pay for the Type 6, which is a large upgrade to 112 tons of cargo space. I have tended to run with the ships stripped down to nothing, no guns, no shields. I have been toasted a few times because of this, but the benefits have outweighed the loss of cargo and buyback costs. In hindsight, I think maybe the adder would have been a better up front choice, but at the time I didn't really know enough about the game to make a good decision. In any event, I don't think the loss of the extra 4 tons hampered me to much.

I have not explored outside of the systems I have used to trade in and or jumping around on the first missions and such. My plan is to basically fully load out the Asp to my liking and then head out on my journey. If at all possible I don't want to come back for a long time.

EDIT: Lots of replies since I started my last reply.
@Ceekay, thanks, I will look into this. I didn't know there were discounts in the game.

@Wiblflibl Thanks a lot for that. That will be invaluable I think.

As it pertains to other ships guys, I think I maybe made an RP decision that I was saving up for the Asp and once I worked up enough money to kit it out, I would be able to go out on my great journey. :)

Grawbad, I meant in terms of exploration. I agree t6 is better for trading than the adder. Whether t6 is better than the adder for exploration depends on whether you value jump range or scanning ease.

Good luck on your journey when you set out, CMDR. Make sure to send us pictures :).

A few weeks ago we were told that we'd explored something like 0.003% of the Galaxy (it'll be higher now but not a lot) so there is plenty out their to hang your name onto.

Oh my call... grab a Lakon Type-6. For around 5.5 to 6 mill bucks you get an Explorer with around 30 Ly jumprange, a class 5 fuelscoop and an brilliant view !

Full equiped is this ship cheaper as an stock Asp.

If you remain deadset on the Asp, I would commend you but recommend you have twice as much as the purchase price in order to fit it out and have the rebuy cost. Here is the best fitting out for explorer range :

It might be an idea to add at least one or maybe 2 heat sinks, it will cut down on your absolute maximum range but not by much, and if you ever do run into the kind of trouble that heat sinks will help, you'll be glad oyu added them.

Once we have the Thargoid ( and hopefuly MANY more Alien races)... running a unarmed/lightly shielded explorer will be a risky adventure.

i would suggest never getting comfortable with running (near) naked through the galaxy... even my Type-9 has teeth.

while this setup doesnt have the shear jump range of the one listed above... it still gets the job done and can also pickup a tad bit of cargo ( Alien artifacts that i'm sure FD will introduce later on) and can defend itself and grab the odd bounty while out/inbound
