Alpha Hype Train Running on Fumes?

Maybe they learned something from Cyberpunk's release and won't overhype something that's not rock-solid. From the released gameplay montage, while it looks very good, at least to this commander's eyes, there are more than a few things to iron out and improve (or even implement? ship boarding hello).

I dont think they will. Frontier have a pretty thick skin for releasing buggy so.. i think they're probably in the "we've delayed it the maximum number of times" as cdpr was with cyberpunk. I cant imagine frontier doing crunch so its probably a very calm event with tea and stuff.
Lol, basically...

I hope not, but the imagery is amusing!

  • oh dear, could you please check the auth server, it just choked again ...
  • at first opportunity, darling, i'm just writing an uplifting email to 10k users who lost their bindings
  • an agitated moring indeed!

Yeah i was thinking something like that. "Look at this amazing shooting bullet gun game we made." -> "All the people playing our game have grown out of fps." -> "Really? that's the last game I remember playing." -> "No matter we'll just release it anyway and see how it goes."

:p

I probably expect too much because I'm a drama queen, but I was hoping the marketing materials would be flowing more frequently as we get closer to the Alpha release.
Frontier have never really gone for the big hyped-up releases, this is about as much as it ever gets - a few dev diaries and streams, a bit of pre-recorded footage, a few Q&A threads.

If anything, there's been slightly more than normal ... though that might be because they announced it in June for a December release that's now looking more like a May release and need to say something in the meantime.

...and if there's no further delays we're getting Alpha in two weeks and then the community can make its own hype, so there's probably nothing else planned before the launch.

Yeah you're right, if you add up all the text and verbal qa info.

My gut feeling is they've showed more by this point though, maybe one more marketing trailer for another headline feature? I think we might be missing one or two of those.

I'd agree more text and less video - they've said that the lockdown restrictions make the videos much more time-consuming to put together, so that might be why the change in balance.

Plus there's an added bonus for FDev. When things crash they can say "it's an Alpha" and get away with it. Then they can say "it's a Beta" and get away with it. When it goes live though, that's when this forum really lights up if those bugs haven't been squished.

And it also might be interesting that we've only been shown gameplay from one permutation of one gameplay feature.

Not a trace of info about engineering and exploration... or even a final version of the planet stuff.

I quite like FDev’s low key approach to promotion. Maybe I’m too long in the tooth for international reveal events and arenas full of expectantly whooping fans. Although now I think about it, if FDev tried to pull that off I suspect most of us would make it look like a local real ale festival. I’m in - whoop whoop.

I have to admit, despite some reservations and concerns, I am almost tempted to make the leap of faith and pre-order the "Deluxe" edition with Alpha access. I am curious as hell about Odyssey and what it will bring to exploration gameplay. I'm just "afraid" I'll get burnt again and Odyssey is indeed just a generic FPS title inserted into Elite. In my nightmares exploration (and other gameplay loops) are just an "afterthought" with only some token new gameplay (e.g. exploration is limited to picking space flowers at space flower POIs and another rank grind).

On the other hand, FDev has put three years of development time into this expansion. That's more work than many Triple-A titles receive in this day and age. I guess I still have another week or two to contemplate (and maybe I'll get lucky and FDev releases some new non-combat information in the meantime)

The noise around Cyberpunk has gone down very quickly.
Haven't seen it make any waves ever since launch and the refunds on PS.

As for Odyssey: Mild interest nails it for me.
I'll play and test the Alpha, see what it's about, but at the current stage, I rather play Valheim.

I probably expect too much because I'm a drama queen, but I was hoping the marketing materials would be flowing more frequently as we get closer to the Alpha release. We keep hearing from the CM team that we should be seeing more about Odyssey in the coming weeks. It seems there are many things about Odyssey that are still "up in the air", so to speak.

Are my expectations of "more" wrong? Anyone else think we should be seeing more content reveals or is your feeling that the flow has been adequate... or possibly even too much?

I think we should be seeing more content reveals given that alpha will make any more of them kind of pointless. That is unless alpha just gives us a small compartmentalized taste of the full product.
