Alright Odyssey, we need some more guns

Odyssey currently offers 11 on-foot weapons:

I find it a bit disillusioned and pitiful to think in 3309, humanity has spread to hundreds of star systems and colonized hundreds of planets;
Various sorts of governments and various sorts of economies.
And yet there are only 3 weapon manufacturers who have produced the same 11 weapons for years now, lore wise?
Even if Kinematic, Manticore, and Takeda dominated the marketplace and created a monopoly in their field, surely they wouldn't just drop 1 model of a weapon and then sit back for years.
(Much like ship manufacturers right now producing the same Cobra Mk3 for some 200 years.)
Here in 2023, we live on 1 planetary body in 1 solar system, using its same singular source of minerals and yet we have a plethora of gun manufacturers coming out with silly new makes and models of the same guns for centuries now.
No kinetic long-range rifle? No plasma LMG? No LMGs at all?
No full-auto PDWs? No kinetic shotguns? No railguns, in a scifi game!? Railguns are like sci-fi 101 weaponry!
No melee weapons? Not even a zappy baton?
Non-lethal weapons are on the commodity list for us to buy/sell in our ships, but we can't use any of them ourselves?
The field of on-foot weapons is ripe for the picking. Odyssey needs some more guns. Give us some more pew pews boys!

One of my favorite games that I had the most fun was the Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam DLC. Had 5 guns in 4 classes, optics on record rifles only, and it was a blast to play.

The Tormentor isn't even the meta. There isn't one meta to begin with. For CZs, the meta seems to be dual wielding L6's. For close quarters, it's the Intimidator. With the Tormentor, you at least still have to aim somewhat precisely and, at range, prejudge the slow projectile travel. And if you master that, you can even execute your assassination target all the way across a settlement!

Also, it has the certain cool factor. It is ED's six shooter. Using it makes you the man with no name! And we have silly space cowboy hats, too!

Seriously: Tormentor!!! I'm starting a fan club.

Okay, maybe it is time to go to bed. Sorry. (not).

The ZappyTool™ is the overcharger.

The way economics works I'm pretty sure by 3300 there will only be one company (to rule the galaxy and in the darkness bind them). Even now MS is trying to own everything.

There are actually only 2 flatscreen TV manufacturers in the world, everything else is a rebadge.

Gameplay objects are more defined by the function they serve in a game and the limitations of coders and artists than by "reality".

You could say the same for ships and their equipment. Free market competition, at least in the way of manufacture, does not exist in the Elite Universe. We are seeing conglomeration at its peak. These corps span governments legal and otherwise....they run the galaxy, not anyone else

Nah, PMFs run the galaxy. Do you see Manticore anywhere? (They used to have a sys-desc but I'm sure it's been overwritten by now). Core Dynamics? Remlock? Surely the Powers must have an actual presence in the galaxy? Aisling Angels? oh wait, PMF.... 😛 ;)

No need for railguns if you have gauss weapons. Which similarly use electromagnetic force to propel a projectile but are frictionless and recoilless, and much more suited to use in a vacuum or zero-G.

I'm speaking specifically of on-foot handheld weapons.
Though, railgun or gauss cannon, either would be nice to see in the collection of handheld weaponry.
I don't care if it's just the same 3 companies, I'd just like to see a wider selection of firearms.

Me too. The gauss rifle and gauss pistol were common weapons in Traveller, the TTRPG that Elite was based on in 1984. It would be nice to see them in-game. Especially useful in shipboard boarding actions IIRC...

Oh that's rad!
I never got into the Elite TRPG.
I'm sure shipboarding is a fun aspect to it. Well I'd love to see more elements from the table-top brought into EDO as well.
There's so much available to expand on the world-building of ED.

Problems is that the shooter mechanisms haven't left much room outside what's been covered. I think a railgun or gauss rifle with a projectile velocity on par with a paintball slingshot and about half the effective range would do very little for the game, and anything better would fall outside the balance precedent set by our current selection. It's also going to feel weird to need to railgun someone nine times to kill them!

Gauss weapons aren't recoilless.

Regardless, even in a setting that has coilguns, a railgun would still likely be simpler and lighter. Probably would be redundant in the context of this game though.

Gauss weapons aren't recoilless.
True - the recoilless rifle is a different weapon in Traveller.
But The GS-7 gauss rifle was developed in response to a Marine and Army request for a quality, high caliber dedicated sniper rifle with extremely low recoil.
The L16A4 Gauss Squad Automatic Weapon is the standard Squad Support Weapon in the Caledonian military. With high muzzle velocity, and low recoil.

There are too many foot weapons as it is. I've only ever needed the Executioner, L6 and P-15 😉 Does anyone know the "tongue in cheek" emoji?

I haven't ever touched any of the others, IIRC, honestly. I have purchased G2/3 s&w along the way, some with mods, but I don't recall if I've ever used any of them...but I must have at some point, maybe...Oh, I did try the Tormentor(?) but prefer the RoF of the P-15.

And I can totally see the desire for more ground weapons. I suspect we'll be presented with "options" near when the AX Ground CZs begin...AEGIS/Azimuth/Sirius/Guardians will "develop" or discover "something"...
