Alt-Tab into browser with Oculus

Hi chaps,

is there a way to Alt-tab into a browser while wearing the Oculus? I generally need to be able to check stuff online (engineers, materials, trade routes, whatever) while playing ED, and I'm fine with going "out of game" for a brief moment to see where I need to go and such. Is there a way to do this easily without having to take the headset off, or do I have to install some of the fancy "overlay" software like V?

I’ve managed to get big screen beta to work in this way. I had to run ED installed with steam via Dr Kai’s profile manager to get this to work as it wouldn’t work when running from oculus home.

The order would be to launch big screen beta and then inside big screen beta launch ED from the profile manager. If I launch without the profile manager then I just got a window rather than any signal in vr.

It uses a lot of cpu resources to leave big screen running so I setup voice attach to launch big screen each time I want to use it. Good luck!

This as well.
My regular screen setup and my vr setup are directly at opposite sites so my monitor is behind me when I'm playing.

Also you don't need steam install of ED, I just downloaded the launcher from the frontier store, and install the game via it.

At first I didn't think having bigscreen running in the background cost any performance but later I'm considering it might so use voice attack not only to switch between the two but also start and close big screen as needed.

Just point the appropriate command sequence at the bigscreen EXE and it launches it for me in less than five seconds.

I could upload my commands but I'm currently just posting on my phone.

I'll chime in here with support for V. As long as you have to install software to make this work, V is a pretty elegant solution. Some have complained of a performance hit when using it, but I haven't had any issues.

Sorry, but my experience of V is well best classed as Biowaste. Huge usage of resources, flaky, have to use Xbox controller, very sparten content. Their Cust Support is..... well like the app, not very good at the moment.

It has potential, but i have tried it 3 times in the past six months with fresh installs and same same each time on both my ED machines. I am not sure, but can't be certain the versions have even changed in my 6 months of V experience, so unsure if they are evn working on it.

Their website gives no upgrade path info (That i am aware off).

Don't get me wrong would love to use this app, as it is what i want when using my VR, but not sure these guys are working on it.

Haven't used Bigscreen, but Virtual Desktop works quite nicely. Provided you start it first, and start ED from the launcher.

Agree, I've been successful with this. I haven't found a way to smoothly alt+tab into a browser w/o an intermediate step, but I haven't fiddled with a lot of settings yet either.

Ah, I haven't seen that one yet. Looks like it's the same concept as Bigscreen so that's cool that it works.

I'm always hesitant to voice my support for V on this forum since most people here are aggressively anti-V. But, at the same time, I feel it's necessary to encourage new Rift users to try it out for themselves. In my case, I haven't noticed any performance issues and I'm fine switching from my HOTAS to the xbox controller to use it. The best way to reach their support is to get on their Discord server (a link is on their site). I'm not sure how active development is either, and they seem to be a pretty small shop, but they're the only game in town for now so I'll continue to follow their progress.

In the strictest sense.
Alt+tab out of ED doesn't work.
Ok it would work if you could see what you where doing on screen, but if you could do that, why would you need this to begin with..

What you need is to have a macro button command or voice macro command to directly activate or focus the virtual desktop environment, then you can alt+tab or do however what you need to do.
For instance I have commands setup for switching to my music player or discord etc that first focus the virtual desktop, in my case BigScreen, then activate spotify\VLC etc.

V is also utterly useless for browsing etc, it just isn't suited for it, also it completely hijacks your command inputs making your ship spin wildly out of control as soon as you highlight any of their windows, barely working for watching netflix while playing, but doing so would still introduce random frame drops, and that's just while supercruising 10k Ly from populated space.
