Am I doing it wrong? (mining)

So I just outfitted my Asp Explorer for mining, used some online sources to find pristine/metallic rings and...

Nada, bupkis, a whole hell of a lot of not much

I've been to about 3 or 4 different systems and have been very disappointed in the haul. I've used prospector limpets on each one. Most have Galite, Indite etc. Occasionally I'll find a <5% platinum or other "P" metal. Even the content of the rocks show medium to low reserves. I got lucky on one and got about 500k for an hours' work (35 prospector limpets!)
I've made sure I'm on the correct planet and ring (e.g. AC1) but it something doesn't seem right, not when I hear about MUCH better than that.
Any help?

If you're in a pristine metallic ring you should see all of the minable metals and the minerals.

Check:

1) did you get the right ring? (A is innermost, alphabet works out)
2) did you pick the right planet/system?

Chances are if you did then you got unlucky.

Just to check - you did have sufficent hoppers in the refinery? So you'd not pulled in (say) bertrandite and gallite which bunged it up stopping (say) palladium getting in? You can vent the cheap stuff from the inventory/refinery tab, just hit the up arrow by the one you don't want. Better than refining it, or your collection drones will pick up the abandoned cargo.

I'm going to double/triple check tonight (i'm at work right now) to make sure but I'm almost certain i was in the right spot. I've watched my hoppers pretty close. What's the weird thing is that the good haul I had was from an "average" type system. One of the things that I'd like to check with other is; am I expecting too much? are they really THAT rare?
Side note: I went looking for one site at a system that (i didn't know) had a neutron star that nearly killed me...greedy, greedy, greedy.

I use a T9 and will typically pull in three to five million per trip.

In the pristine metallic rings, outside any RES, I'll see roughly one in five with rubbish only in, three in five with up to 10% good stuff total and one in five of 20% good stuff.
