Am I even playing the game right?

Good day,

Honest question:

Would you say in a general way that the game is about completing missions, or is the expectation that players do other things and just pepper in the occasional mission?

I find myself solely doing missions, and while not complaining, I wonder if I’m playing the game as intended.

Interesting question, my gameplay has always revolved around objectives I set myself to meet the aim of getting my next ship and modules. I still do this now however I have every ship in the game and all modules, engineered, etc. So now I simply do what I like such as exploring, combat, Thargoid stuff, Guardian stuff, looking for Raxxla and so on.

Now how I completed those objectives would have been a mixture of things from missions, to credit farming and or combat, some exploration.

As long as you are doing something, it's as intended.

Missions should help guide you to do other things, such as a mining mission introduce you to mining. You don't need to bother if you don't want, do whatever you fancy.

ETA - missions are integral to the background simulation as well, so you completing them is helping out the faction that gave you the mission.

Do what you want to, plenty of scope. You can fight for a cause, join a power and play to help them, explore the universe, be a miner, or attack aliens. The choice is yours

Missions will help with the credits. Plus you get to become Allied to the factions you work for. Which can only be a positive thing.

That said: There are players out there, that have possibly never done a single mission.

There is no 'correct way to play'. There is no 'end game'. So just enjoy.

Me I log on and see what is going on and then; take my pick.

I guess there's only so many ways to say the same thing but it's really up to you.

When you're playing, say, Skyrim, you can take on a quest and then either head straight to the specified dungeon or you can investigate a castle or cave that you find on the way.
It might turn out to be a waste of time or it might turn out to contain some fancy new weapon or follower.

Similar thing with ED.

As long as you're aware that you have options, do whatever you want.

If I could only offer one bit of advice for playing ED it'd be to get a notepad and write down the names of systems/planets and stations where you see interesting stuff - then go back and check them out.
That way, you can finish off missions without getting side-tracked and then spend a bit of time just snooping around all the interesting stuff you've made notes about.

INARA tells me that, overall, I've made zero credits in the last 12 months, despite sinking over a thousand hours into ED, so I guess I must've been doing something that got my attention. [where is it]

Are you flying a spaceship?

If so, then, yes... you are playing it right.

Aside from that... is there a 'right' way? No, not really. I mean, the way I play is obviously better than everybody else, but is it 'right'?
Don't look now but I think I see a group of SRV's outside your house with torches and pitchforks!

Pardon the ramble, but it does end in a point.

Saw a video recently about the 'best' way to drink whisky. The idea was, take three glasses, leave one straight, add water to the second, add ice to the third. People have different opinions about what is right but really, the best way to drink it is the way it tastes best to you. Same goes here.

If you're having fun, you're doing it right.

Do whatever you enjoy. When you get tired of that activity, try some others. Open universe. Don't fall into the trap of "playing it right".

You're playing an independent spaceship cmdr in 3304. Do whatever you want (though not everything is without consequence, obviously) in that context. If you want to do missions, do them. If you want to do other things, do other things.

If you're not sure what other things there are to do, then there's various nudges within the game, but if you're feeling at a loss, just ask here on the forums, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions.

Best of luck cmdr! o7

This, try ALL the things Elite offers, then do the set that appeals to you; don't forget to retry them ALL every now and again to see if there has been improvements or your taste has changed .

When the game launched pretty much nobody did missions as they were completely pointless. Nowadays it is a good way to get money, rank and influence the BGS. Whether you want to do them is still up to you though, it depends on your goals. You can progress in any profession completely independently too.

As long as you are doing something, it's as intended.

I would say even "doing nothing" is still as intended. While technically impossible to do "nothing", as even existing is doing "something", sitting about, taking up space on a pad is still doing "something" - you're taking up a pad, quietly protesting anyone else landing at that particular location.

Missions should help guide you to do other things, such as a mining mission introduce you to mining. You don't need to bother if you don't want, do whatever you fancy.

Agreed - Missions are either a guide to activities, or supplemental income from those activities, though they can also be a primary source, just depends on how you play.

ETA - missions are integral to the background simulation as well, so you completing them is helping out the faction that gave you the mission.

Yep, and conversely by helping any given faction, you will receive better and better paying missions from those factions as well.

So right or wrong - the only way I'd say Elite was not intended to be played is to not play Elite.

As everyone above said... with the caveat

In every OTHER thread in this forum, we constantly fight over what is right and wrong. Basically, if you aren't doing what a given poster likes, then you're doing it wrong.
