Am I the only one that finds the FSS rather addicting?

Expect much salt here from certain quarters but eh?
I find that when I am exploring, nosing about, or looking for something specific in a system with the FSS I just have to scan everything. This may change in a month or three but for now I enjoy the FSS feature to check out a system in its entirety and learning all about it.

Suppose I am one of a handful so fixated?

Personally I just check if there's anything in the ELW/WW zone or if anything strikes me as particularly unusual. If nothing, I move on. It's too boring to do everything after a while. If there is something interesting, I'll probably scan the lot though and map the good ones.

I've seen a lagrange proto nebula, with crystalline thingies and molluscs... and seen a few void-opal hotpots (not equipped for mining though so I'll have to go back).

While enroute to wherever I'm heading I:
Arrive at star
Kill throttle to fuel scoop
Run FSS scan to kill time as fuel scoop runs
Sell data at whatever station I'm ending at

I have a compulsion to scan every single thing in a system.
And sometimes investigate and/or map.

So if I'm just passing through, I absolutely can not open the FSS or I won't be leaving any time soon. :D

Returned from a trip today with more than 600 systems >fully< discovered and partially mapped. So are you OP among a handfull? I guess not. I also enjoy using the FSS in inhabited systems, as the signals are quite cool with the intercepted radio chatter and such things. Exploration is so cool since 3.3...

But tomorrow is cash in time. That will take a while, as all systems are new discoveries :).

Nice.

Yes it's quite compelling to scan many things I wouldn't normally scan on a long trip. Annoying as hell :D

But with the Geo/Bio/Xeno planetary locations revealed, all those airless ice-rocks that I'd see on the sys map and hit Jump-to-next-system on previously end up causing me to go land on them to see what's there!

Time will tell whether it's still good or grindy as anything in a few months time.

Glad you're enjoying it.
I totally understand why some people love it, even though I hate it.
I was addicted to the old method, so I just wish we could have both.

(Sorry if that wasn't salty enough for you ;) )

I find myself checking many more systems for all the USS's to find those elusive HGEs. Also detail scans of earth-likes, water worlds and terraforming candidates are good money.

It all adds up. May not be the most efficient way to get stuff, but it entails a greater variety in gameplay.

I like being able to plan USS drops as part of my system navigation (based on time, type, current loadout and other situationals) instead of them being a random distraction from a final destination.

Actually I find your point of view interesting in that I dreaded the long SC flight toward some distant speck hoping for a quick resolution so I could turn toward the next before I lost too much speed.
I would never go back to the old way.
All of which points to the perils of game design, aka, you’re never going to make everyone happy I suppose.

I like it too. It's quite addictive for me to be honest. Just not as addictive as opal mining, otherwise I would already be on my way to Colonia again ;)

Yes, I like FSS.
It's great that you immediately see the types of planets and signal sources. It's faster than switching to system map after the honk.

And I often find myself hunting for planets even though there no ELWs and stuff and sometimes I go to check the planets simply because they look interesting in FSS.

For the first time since I bought the game (2.2) I've remapped galaxy / system buttons to something easier to reach on the HOTAS and I'm on my first long haul passenger run out into the black. I (so far) love the difference in gameplay - before I would jump / refuel / honk and most times not even bother looking at the system map. Now I scan everything, flip to system map (which luckily remembers if you're in orrery mode), check out how it looks then maybe investigate something that might be interesting; it's really made all the difference for me.

Does the note that says geological stuff on the surface also mention other anomalies or does it always require a detailed surface scan to find anything?

Long range DSS is was your friend ;)

I just enjoyed the flying around, looking out of the window part. Sure, dragging yourself 500,000 Ls from star to star wasn't exactly fun, but 'in system' I was always looking to minimize my SC time, which actually involved using my brain rather than simply selecting the nearest target and flying straight towards it. The FSS doesn't require me to use my brain for anything, so it's much less engaging for me.

I agree you can't make everyone happy, but why deliberately make people UNhappy by removing something that they were enjoying?
