Okay, Frontier -- we've had the new FSS in production for about three weeks now. ...it's time to begin talking about optional improvements players might choose to make.
What you gave us is a one-size-fits-all tool. That was fine for a starting point.
But encouraging pilots to refine their ships to optimize them for a specific task has always been core to the Elite Dangerous experience. It's certainly one of the things I love about this game.
You've given us an engineer mod for the DSS that lets probes cover more area. Now let's engineer the FSS, shall we?
Not everyone needs nor wants a FULL system scanner. Explorers might prefer more resolution in one section of the scanner. As a compulsive ship tuner, I definitely want higher resolution toward the lower end of the scanning spectrum.
I'd like to see an engineering mod that can focus a ship's FSS on JUST the lower end of the spectrum, which would then be able to discern between Degraded Emissions, Encoded Emissions, and High Grade Emissions, not to mention the other signal sources that you've lumped into one narrow band in the plain-vanilla FSS's display.
For some pursuits (or specific ships), that low-end spectrum is the ONLY band that's of interest.
Having an FSS mode that greatly expanded the resolution of those various signal sources at the low end of the spectrum would take much of the tedium out of searching for specific types. ...And possibly support one of your likely responses to the current (probably unintended or unwanted) method (exploit?) of HGE farming, which is to lower the period of availability for some USS's, so that there's JUST enough time to get to the signal source, but not enough time to repeatedly relog to harvest it multiple times (some days I think you may have already done this for HGE's).
Frankly, such a mod would also provide a quality of life improvement. Because it would allow us to ignore the signal sources that you've turned to rubbish (like the combat aftermath ones, for example, which used to be worthwhile but now, seemingly, never are; because the "story" now half-baked into that kind of signal source was implemented about as well as those "Mysterious Tips" that someone half-added a couple years ago but never polished enough to make worthwhile). Conversely, if you ever DID decide to improve the activities tied to specific signal sources as part of actually fostering pilot narrative, a more tunable FSS would make discovering such content easier and thus more likely to be consumed.
