An unusual transmission recieved...

The other night I was transporting some data for the Federal Navy, and I noticed this message had been sent to me:

17966874_10155181118978899_6448078525551526952_o.jpg

It says (in case you can't see):

...Transponder Signal LYC-182-A Detected...
...Matching Signal Detected. Alaunus. Time Stamp Predated Parameters.
...Alaunus... We are lost... two days ago... 10... cure for... ship's population... 98%... round the clock... space... 22... towar... Horae... quickly... do my job... For now...
...Signal Lost...

I went to the Alaunus system, which was nearby, but I saw nothing there. I even investigated the many, many unidentified signals I encountered as I searched each and every planet and moon, but found nothing whatsoever of any interest.

Anyone have any idea what this might be about?

Sounds like quite the disaster on-board that vessel...

Did you try checking out the system Horae? This part -

towar... Horae...

could mean they were headed toward Horae maybe.

Edit: Ninja'd :)

Those sorts of messages seems to pop up when you scan a ship or data beacon, and is part of the data you collect. I've long suspected that putting together all the various versions of these may lead to full messages, but there are just too many.

Anomulous FSD data and the like all have similar odd messages that accompany them.

True enough, though I've never seen one quite like this with system names and stuff. This seems like something different in my opinion.

I didn't have time to check the Horae system, I spent about 6 hours in Alaunus, and had to sleep sometime. I wonder if it's still worth investigating, it's been a couple of days now.

I followed one of those messages one time... found a wrecked ship... some canisters and escape capsules etc. Clever idea, but not carried through with much imagination. Could have been much more.

Not much more it can be at the moment.

It could have been a bit of a scavenger hunt to dig up info from here and there before you put together the puzzle, then something requiring a bit more skill than following the scanner to find the wreckage. And what about a message once you've finished from the missing family etc thanking you for rescuing them and giving you a reward, or even an offer to sell the family as slaves to someone else instead of rescuing them? Geez, they did better mysteries in "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego"... and that was educational software!

How would you find something like that? I mean, finding one wreck on a whole planet? I can't even begin to estimate the odds.

You mean without it appearing on the scanner? Your ship DOES display planetary coordinates... part of the "scavenger hunt" could tracking down a mining ship which thought it saw a ship matching that description near such n such coordinates. Would be a bunch more fun than being handed a shipwreck on a platter, and doesn't take much imagination.

Yes, that would be nice, but that's not how it works right now. You said you found a wrecked ship, I have to assume it was on a planet. I just wondered how you knew where to look for it. The message I got doesn't have any coordinates, just system names. Unless you mean you found a generic wreck that wasn't necessarily referred to by the transmission?

I've actually said many times before through MANY games, something that would benefit ANY game is repeatable content with random elements, the more elements the better. This sort of thing could easily be made into that.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Go to the planet in question and the ship will appear on your scanner, just follow it in. It doesn't matter which bit of the planet you start at, the game will just put the wreck near enough to where you are for it to show up. No skill required, it's all a bit disappointingly easy.

Just appears on my scanner? You mean the SRV scanner, or the ship scanner? I'll keep looking for that sort of thing, then. I didn't see anything in Alaunus, I'm now in Horae, looking around. Nothing of interest here either, but it's a populated system. I suspect I may have to return to Alaunus for a second look around... unless there's a time limit on these kinds of things. It might have expired already.

It's been a while (not played since 2.0) but from memory it appeared on my ship's scanner... much like the way the "find the thing on the planet" missions do.

I played that in 2nd grade in 1982 (or maybe 1984?) on an Apple II

Depends on how big the planet is!

Players have found plenty of 'mystery' stuff before by Mk I eyeball. It's an enormous task, but very satisfying when someone finds it!! :) Nowadays we get a nice locking on signal to home in on when salvaging. They're cool missions.

we found the same message at a listening post between epsilon indi and wolf 25 - where were you when you received the message - at a listening post?
