Analysis of most likely/needed animals

Bumping this thread again, to update after the Conservation pack reveal.

At this point, not taking into account flying birds or marine animals what is needed:

More animals from Oceania. Unquestionably that is what's needed most at this point. Please frontier. If you include the Hairy Nosed Wombat instead of Common Wombat, three of the four most requested animals from this region are endangered and any of them would have fit well in this pack - this also includes the Tasmanian Devil and a Tree Kangaroo. I know spots are limited, and I'm glad we did get the Platypus in the last pack, but this region is still grossly underrepresented.

Animals with less than 3 representatives from the family (when there are a good number of species to choose from)
Suidae - with the Red River Hog being the most likely candidate.
Procyonidae -Raccoon or Coati.
Viverridea - a civet. I'd probably rank this a little lower than the first two because there just doesn't seem to be quite as much support for them, but there's still options.

Animals with props/artwork:
Black Rhino
Red Deer
Dromedary

Not essential but second tier animals that are highly requested:
Wolverine
Maned Wolf
Porcupine (Old World species)
Sloth (any species)
Baboon (any species)

That's 12 animals. So, lemme do some math (🤢):

Autumn animal pack: 7 slots

Winter standard pack: 4 slots

Hypothetical (not necessarily true) anniversary animal: 1

That's 12. Now the question: can we make both packs feature these animals? Lemme try:

  1. Tasmanian devil
  2. Red deer
  3. Wolverine
  4. Red river hog
  5. Sloth
  6. Maned wolf
  7. Tree kangaroo
Anniversary: Dromedary camel
  1. Black rhino
  2. Baboon
  3. Porcupine
  4. Wombat

I further believe in more packs and hope that these animals are not put together in two packs 😀.

That's a good set up (and welcome back, and appreciate your ideas as always!) I'm not sure how that first pack would all tie together, but as this most recent announcement shows, Frontier is not just sticking to regions or even biomes at this point. I'm sure they'd find a way, or would mix up the grouping to make it work.

I sure hope so, but in worst case scenario, we'd have two packs left (unless the two future dated files were put to the side, which I doubt very much will happen). That would be at least 8 habitat animals, and at most 14 if Frontier stuck to the current model.

I'd absolutely love getting 4 packs next year as well, to give us 6 more packs, but I think we have to see where this goes.

It is Kind of a problem that we have no clue how long support will continue and thats why everybody is afraid that we just get 2 more packs. And this is reason why people are always claiming about the so called odd picks because they are afraid that their favourite animal will not come to the game. Instead of enjoying the pack people are screaming about their favourite animals (it is not meant in a rude way because I understand it. My personal favourite is the Dik Dik which has surely a lower chance than some other animals).
Personally I think the wetlands pack with a lot of surprise animals was a potential hint that support could go further than this year with some headliner species which can be used for more packs. I know only time will show how long we will get packs but I do not want to go with these "end of the year is end of support screaming". If there will be end of support after Christmas it is also okay for me. And until then I will be happy for every animal we will get. Be it the bighorn sheep or the tasmanian devil.

I must say I would just call 2 animals at the moment as really essential zoo animals (without looking at my personal preferences). These are the Emu and the Dromedary.

I think I would organize the most needed by groups. I have a few personal favorites in each, but this is the order of groups that are noticeably missing when I play. I am going to exclude aviary-dwelling, aquarium-dwelling, and farm animals. I put them in order of how much I notice their absence, and gave an estimate of how many I think should be added.
  1. Monkeys: Chattering small monkeys chasing each other about their enclosures has always been a part of visiting a zoo for me. I really, really wish there were more options here. I think they could add about 12-18 to get a decent spread of them before people would start to get tired of monkeys.
  2. Ground Birds: Right now there are seven options for birds.
  3. Small cats: While we don't need as many of them (I think they should add 4-7), I really notice their absence. That sulky small cat that usually doesn't want to come out of its den was another part of attending a zoo.
  4. Misc. Small Mammals: Here I would put porcupines, mustelids, coatis, civets, the fossa, sloths, and others. Most would require unique rigs, and they are fun for smaller habitats. I think we could add 7-12 from here. I don't really care which ones, as long as they vary in rigs, continents, and biomes.
  5. Deer: They could add 3-6. I feel like I usually see more varieties of deer in zoos.
  6. Canids: I know everyone is on board with the maned wolf, and most think we could use another fox. I think they could comfortably add 3-6.
  7. Marsupials: There are enough missing and highly requested animals here. I don't notice their absence as much, but I feel like much of the community would rank them even higher.
  8. Goats: There are are a lot of cool mountain goat type species. They could add 5-9 before I would get tired of goats.
  9. Antelope: The game has a lot of antelope, but mostly from Africa. We could maybe use a large one from Africa, but I would want to see more Asian varieties.
  10. Reptiles: Don't hate me for this, but I love the crocodilians that the devs have churned out so far. I actually wouldn't mind another one. We could probably use another monitor. I mostly made this category for turtles, especially aquatic ones.
  11. Pigs: We could use 2-3. I don't like them very much, but I notice their absence
There are a few individual animals that are missing or that I would like to see, but this is the gist of what I'm hoping for in the future. I really hope they make more packs!

Honestly, if we talk just about needed Animals, the list is surprisingly small.
Really needed animals rn would be something like:
  • Baboon, but i understand if you say that the mandrill is close enough
  • 2 more small Monkeys
  • a Pelican
  • 2 Species of Waterfowl (Ducks, Geese, Swan, whatever just so we got something to put in our lakes and ponds)
  • Emu and a Wallaby as Australia Essentialts

And thats it honestly. While i do want many more animals, these are the only ones i feel like are really needed for the game to be a round and complete experience without much major glaring holes.
Is it perfect? Nah, not even petting zoo animals are here, but it would be good enough

Duck, duck, duck, swan? Something for our lakes.

Assorted small ground fowl. It's pleasant to have pheasants.

Emu + assorted small marsupials toround out Australia

A few more small monkeys

A few more small mammals like Red River Hogs, racoons, and small cats.

Dromedary

Assorted goats and misc. antelope.

An African Dwarf Crocodile, so we can have a crocodian from every continent.

I'd say the most needed would be:
  1. Leopard - the final big cat and now the most requested animal on the Meta Wishlist
  2. Gibbon (any kind) - the last ape and another highly coveted choice
  3. Przewalski's Wild Horse- I almost feel like I could write an essay why need them lol
    • High contender on the wishlist
    • Extensive real-world history of conversation in zoological parks
    • An absent holdover from the Zoo Tycoon days
    • Supplies much needed representation for equines
  4. Sloth (any kind) - one of the last true iconic zoo animals missing, plus being a worldwide phenomenon and meme would probably help with marketing :p
  5. Porcupine (any kind) - Personally I lean towards North American to boost up "woodland critters" numbers, but another beloved, charismatic animal
  6. Walrus - the last family of the pinnipeds (since we have seals and sea lions), plus a fan favorite
  7. Monkeys - So many potential contenders (howler, squirrel, spider, Colobus - my personal fave)
  8. Turtles - I'm very surprised the lack of support for these folks around here. There's so many opportunities to build upon both reptile and semi-aquatic numbers with them. And not just as exhibit animals - there's a great deal of very large turtle species that can certainly have enclosures. I'm quite disappointed we didn't get one in the new Wetlands DLC.
Contenders include the alligator snapping turtle, fly river turtle, Amazon river turtle, giant softshell turtle, and of course sea turtles
  9. Australian Animals - Certainly not alone with wanting more from down under, especially the opportunity to get marsupials (tree kangaroos, wombats, Tasmanian devils - all of which are quite high on the list)
  10. Birds and birds and birds - I refuse to give up hope on flighted birds. We're nearing 80 mammals, and a meager total of 7 of birds. If it were my call, at least one bird per each DLC going forward, along with the longly desired Aviary Pack (a big one at that)
For flighted, I'd say parrots, owls, eagles, vultures, and toucans would round out the Top 5.
But for Frontier's current trend of ground and aquatic birds: pelicans, ducks, puffins, ibis, spoonbills, emu, kiwi, secretary bird, and so many more are in need.
Holy smokes, I guessed I channeled my inner Nostraduckus, my top 3 guesses made it :oops:
Show me ducks next, baby!

Still the same for me--South America, Oceania, birds (even non-aviary birds--have you really ever been to a zoo with 10 mammal species for every one bird?)

Wombat
Sloth
Fossa
