Animals in few or no zoos

I actually just learned that walrus are limited in captivity with only 11 in captivity in the USA and some in Russia. Walrus are certainly a highly requested animal in PZ.

Pairi Daiza also has them and a baby was born in the zoo two weeks ago 👏

The saola is an animal I would love to see in the game - it's quite unlike any other animal around, is extremely endangered, its conservation is being heavily supported by zoos and although there is very little actual footage of live animals, there is a very thorough report that outlined the behaviour of a saola that was briefly kept in captivity, with information on basic things such as the posture is assumes when resting, its method of feeding, its vocalisations (rare; a bleat of one second duration without any of the vibrating quality of a goat bleat), grooming behaviour and even the posture it assumes when passing waste.

Are there any other very difficult animals that we have in game that zoos struggle to care for in real life?
uhm... good question
  • Great white sharks (have been tried to be in captive but instead die due to its banging its head to the wall while swimming (if i was not wrong))
  • Cetacean (although i would love the animal in the game, they cant be in captivity)
  • Javan Rhino (have been tried to be in captivity but its hard to breed, only an be found in Ujung Kulon National park (although it is a great challenge for the game))
I read on a post that the proboscis monkeys do live at Singapore zoo successfully but other zoos struggle due to their dietary needs.
ok for this one i dont know for other countries, but here almost every zoo have proboscis monkey and it breeds, alot. here Proboscis monkey is common in zoos (might be because its native here) so i think it really depends on the environment (although Singapore is in the tropic)
Are there any in particular you hope will join the game?
  • Sumatran Rhino (one of my favorite animal, i really wish for it to be in game)
  • King Cobra
  • Domestic Animals (like Asian Water Buffalos, Sheeps, Goats, Cows, Horses, and ETC)
  • Birds (obviously the one that can fly or soar)

i cant think of any more animals 😥

So today I learned that narwhals are not kept in captivity. It never occured to me while playing tons of ZT2, how strange! Then again, that game had alot of animals that are not kept in captivity.

I am fairly certain we wont se them in PZ, but at least I learned something new.

The main animal that is extremely rare in zoos I'd love to see in the game is the aforementioned Leopard Seal; they're one of my absolute favourite animals and their history at Taronga Zoo at least gives them some precedent. Fun fact, Taronga has actually cared for several different rescued Leopard Seals over the years, so while none are kept by the zoo currently it wasn't even a one time thing.

(Casey and Sabine the Leopard Seals at Taronga in 2009, who lived with yet another individual, Brooke, before her death in 2008. Sabine passed in 2011 and Casey in 2014)

Leopard seals are awesome, thanks for that info. I figured they must have been there for a while, as I remember seeing them "advertised" on the official zoo website a long time ago (I planned on visiting a few years back but things didn't pan out - would love to try again when Covid settles down in Aus).

Narwhal are probably my favourite cetaceans. I'm fervently against keeping cetaceans in captivity (until we figure out how to do it right), but back when I was younger and less conscientious about these things I used them in basically all my Zoo Tycoon zoos, including the original Zoo Tycoon Marine Mania.

I always mixed them with belugas in my arctic sections
