Animals should be able to escape, however, they will knock out guests, instead of attacking them.

Animals should have the ability to escape. This would happen if:
-There's proper fencing
-The animal doesn't have their space requirements met
-The animal isn't taken care of
-Fences are damaged and not repaired

If an animal is able to escape, it will roam the Zoo Grounds randomly, looking for whatever they need or just letting off steam by simply knocking out guests.
So they don't have to attack the guests or kill them, which keeps the game kid-friendly. Even add some stars orbiting the heads of knocked out guests, to make it "less serious" and add to the toon style.
Upon being knocked out, a guest will fall unconscious on the ground for around a minute. Upon waking up, they will be confused and really angry, and either seek medical attention, or leave the park. This could cause some sort of lawsuit penalty, where an amount of money is taken away from the player.

Of course, there would be many ways of preventing this. Having security, and some degree of animal control would help very much. Simply order animal control to knock out the animals that escaped with sleeping darts, and have them returned to their exhibits, and repair whatever error caused the escape.

And frankly, it would be unrealistic if the more intelligent animals did nothing to attempt escaping.
