Fiction ANNOUNCEMENT: Gollancz novel ELITE: NEMORENSIS by Simon Spurrier

Well, I've only had time to read the first chapter, but... Ah... Let's just say it's not suitable for children!:eek:

I just read the kindle short preview of this book... I don't think I have ever read worse writing...

I am stopping after 3 paragraphs as I don't want my view of the elite universe poluted by this drivel!

What a shame.

A FAIRLY SHORT AND ENTIRELY SPOILER FREE REVIEW:
Ok I've just finished, I didn't rush, I carved out some nice relaxing quiet me time, the fact that the book is the very definition of a page turner helped me reach the edge in a relatively short space of time.

I found the book exciting, although a tad lurid at times, the pace of the book is in perfect balance with the story, the chase, and it builds up to an exciting ending.
In short, the book was great.

It is not, however, an Elite book, references to the Elite universe felt tacked on, I feel that with a few name changes here and there that this could easily have been a Star Trek book.

But don't let this point put you off, it's author sweeps you up into the action with a few pages and doesn't plonk you back down until the final page, it's a masterfully crafted piece of literature and one I'm glad to have read and happy to have paid for.

Put it this way, I'd buy a sequel if one was written.

I'm about a third of the way through 'docking is difficult' and you could say exactly the same of that.

The writing style changes in the second chapter and even more in the third. I think the first chapter's style was aimed to reflect the drug-induced orgasmic pleasure that the main duo is in the midst of.

I'm only in the third chapter myself, so this is only my initial feeling, but I'd give the story another chance, if I were you.

I'd stick with it, it does get better and leads up to a good ending.

Forming an opinion of a book after only reading 3 paragraphs is like only watching the opening titles of a movie and then declaring its sh**e.

Or like judging a book by its cover, which is generally frowned upon. But we all do it. Its like Fightclub. We're not supposed to talk about it, but we do anyway.

Finished the book now.
Definitely worth sticking with, even if the "adult" bits are slightly embarrassing

I don't want to review other Elite writers' work too much, but perhaps I can at least say that I ended up enjoying Nemorensis the most of the three Gollancz books.

I'm six chapters in, and I'm enjoying it immensely. It was a bit of a "culture shock" at first, with adult content and orgasmic space combat but now that the story is settling I'm considering it £4.99 well spent.

Someone commented at some stage that it felt like a generic space story which could have fitted into any space setting. I disagree - I think there are little Elite touches through the story so far. It "feels" Elite, if that makes any sense.

I thought this book was excellent, a really good read.

I wonder what Frontier thought of all the adult stuff? Quite pleasing to see that they are not censoring content.

Ok, I've finished this book, my 2c (or 6.99) - It is not a bad book, but not great either, with some positives and negatives. Your appreciation will depend on what you like (well, captain obvious here):

The good: rhythm is good (page turner), story has a bit of Bonnie n Clyde to it, and it is not all that obvious where it is going.

The not so good: the "adult parts" could have been better done, and, in a certain way, it lacks "story".

Regarding the "elite connection": sometimes writers overdo the connection thing: a good connection is using a universe context without being artificial (e.g. Referring a ship model when it isn't natural to do so).

Thoroughly enjoyed this one... Though i'm not entirely sure how to interpret the way the book closes with respect to the two main characters. I can't help but to try to analyse it.

As Regular from the 2000AD Online Forums....

I know the name of the author quite well.

As I was informed on the very same forum of these other books not included with the other five books I have ordered.

I 'play' elite Also my sister, amanda , we share the "pilot' in game.
Amanda is 14 now, and I'M.. a "bit' older :)
OUR parents think it is good, cos it helps with English and maths( in the markets) and ,of course the astronomy .
TO show a"interest in 'our-game' our father buyed 2 books for us. They are both elite books ,with elite logo and have word "based on the groundbreaking new game elite dangerous and the 80's classic elite.
The titled one 'wanted' is good, but concerned for book titled nemorensis.
.
I ask you is this o.k for 14 year old , there is a lot of 'adult' subject matter?
maybe for 14 year old.. BUT REMEMBER game is rated pegi 7+ so , maybe someones parent may think the same and buy book for younger child because it has a 'game link'.
Possible frontier OR Auther may speak to publishing and get age warning on book cover.

Out of all the Elite books I've read so far (Nemorensis, Wanted, Docking is Difficult, The Dark Wheel, Mostly Harmless, Reclamation), this is the one I probably enjoyed the least.

It wasn't a bad storyline, the eroticism didn't bother me at all, and while it didn't scream "Elite" to me, it didn't feel out of place, either.

But to me, the writing kept getting in the way of the story.

The long passages of narration seemed to be screaming, "Look how well I can write!"

And in my book that's not good. (One of my favourite quotes is Elmore Leanord's "When it sounds like writing, I rewrite it".)

Bill.
