Anti-Aliasing in a Nutshell - Odyssey

So after a quick test...there is some improvement in the image, but the aliasing while in motion is still horrible and I can't seem to find a configuration that remedies that.
If you have fast enough GPU you can try the DL 2.25x DSR setting, which downscales from roughly 4K to 1080p - it will improve the image a bit more, but at a higher FPS cost.

Also, DLDSR downscales the image, so make sure you are not using FSR via the ingame graphic quality settings - I am using the Ultra preset with FXAA , Supersampling - 1.0 and Upscaling - "Normal".

I have tried ramping up SMAA to 2.0, but it doesn't make much difference - the aliasing in ED is still very ordinary for a modern game and I am not confident that FDev is willing or able to fix it.

I'm confident they are not
Agreed and we are left with trying to find tweaks to work around the problem with limited success unfortunately.

Slightly off topic - I once again have managed to find a game I like to play that requires a knowledge of selecting, setting up and tweaking hardware and software to get the most out of it!!
I end up spending more time tweaking than playing, which seems to be the way with niche simulator type games I have managed to get hooked on over the years.

Maybe FSR 2.0 can provide some hope, because I cant see them implementing DLSS just for Nvidia card owners.

I'm on a 1660 (not Super or ti or anything additional), so I can't really do 4k.

So because you don't want to spend the time optimising your rig, the games company should change their entire engine for everyone else. Yup, makes sense...

If a game requires you to spend time optimizing your rig just to get basic standards of performance and quality that other games offer you just fine the very first time you fire them up...maybe it's the game, and not a question of rig optimization. Juuuuuust maybe.
