I really WANT to like vanilla Plasma Chargers, but the power draw on them is just exorbitant. Class 1 plasma chargers take 8.7 megawatts per shot (I just tested it extensively). That means that to sustain two of them - just two - you would need a class 7A Charge Enhanced power distributor. There's no way that any small ship can possibly sustain them; I really wanted to use 2 on my keelback if possible, but even a fully-engineered class 3 distributor can, at best, sustain a single one.
All that for 12.75 DPS over time.(also tested) This gives them an unfathomably bad DPE of 2.93.
C1 Gauss takes 43% the distro, has 233% the AP, and does 10 DPS with 5.2 DPE. Which means you're paying 4.9 extra MW of distro for 2.75 DPS. And that's only when you're shooting at shields. Once you get through to the armor, even against a cyclops, the plasma charger is going to be doing 7.65 SDPS, while the gauss is still doing 10. And against an Orthrus, it's even worse; the plasma charger will be doing 5.88 SDPS, while the gauss is still doing 10.
Larges run into the same problems. They're at least BETTER, but they're still completely unpowerable; a single c3 large takes 12.5 MW every 2 seconds, which means using even two of them is beyond the reach of virtually any ship in the game. And in exchange, they offer functionally identical performance to C2 gauss cannons, which do their damage with 4.86 DPE, versus 3.25. Which, for context, means a Corvette with a fully engineered C8 powerplant can sustain 52 DPS on Gauss Cannons, but only 35 DPS with Plasma Chargers. With C1 plasma chargers, a hilariously bad shield DPS of 31.8. Against hulls, it's even worse; 7.33 DPS.
I'm not kidding. A fully engineered corvette using ALL its power on C1 plasma chargers can do less hull damage than a hauler can do with a class 1 gauss cannon.
I just...who designed this? WHY did they design this? Who would ever USE this?
