Any plans of letting community host their own servers with their own mods and rules?

After years away, and despite brief attempts to jump back in, I'm struck by how Elite continues its journey in what feels like the wrong direction. I distinctly remember David Braben discussing a 10-year development cycle after release, after which Frontier would reportedly release server files, empowering the community to host their own games and develop mods.

With more than a decade now behind us, my question is whether this vision has been abandoned. A significant number of players I've engaged with express considerable disappointment with Elite's evolution, and like me, they believe that giving the community the reins could breathe much-needed life into what many now perceive as a "graveyard.

Good things do happen sometimes, and I'm hopeful for a positive outcome here. I share your feelings of uncertainty, though.

I think the main premise of the game has always been one shared Galaxy, (putting aside the whole open v solo thing) where everyone impacts it. Breaking off populations into their own little shards and whatnot kind of goes against one of the core pitches of the game. I can see why you'd want it though.

David Braben said (to keep the offline players onboard who were worried about server close down once the game wrapped up) that once the game stopped being maintained by FD they would release the code to allow it to continue. IF you trust him then that will be when your wish comes possible.
imo it won't be before

so for your wish to come true the game has to die.... so personally I hope it's not for a while. Also (just imo) I believe it was just trying to get the offline players to shut up. I don't believe this will be honoured anyway

Gabe Newell said a similar thing about valve and steam.... he said if ever Valve went under they would release the game installs as a bulk download for everyone to get with online steam DRM removed if ever they went under so players would not lose all the games they bought. I dont for 1 second believe him either!.

Then your memory is incorrect, unfortunately.

What was originally said was to reassure those people who thought that backing a server-based game was risky because it might shut down after a couple of years and they'd be back to playing Oolite/FFE again [2]. There were two separate parts of that reassurance, with the first part [1] being said more frequently than the second and in different contexts:
  • "We have a ten-year plan for development". This was intended to reassure people that Frontier were in it for the long term, not - as it was later generally interpreted - as a maximum lifespan! With the benefit of hindsight, Frontier were also extremely optimistic about how long features would take to develop, so ten years of clock time is nowhere near enough to implement ten years of that plan. (We're probably about in year 4 of it, to the extent that the original plan is still intact). This statement got made pretty much from the start of the Kickstarter.
  • "If the servers are shut down we will release an offline version". There was no statement in this that they would release the actual server code, or release the code in a form which allowed modifications or even multiplayer - a version of the game with a static galaxy and no server dependency [3] is more likely what they meant. Yes, this would be lacking a lot of features, but the audience for the statement was the old FE2/FFE crowd who were used to not having those features anyway. This statement only got made shortly before release when the official offline version was cancelled.
As Elite Dangerous is currently going along in a financially sustainable manner including active development, and Frontier the company appears to be stabilising its finances and returning to moderate profitability, this is still going to be years away from being applicable.

[1] The "ten year" plan was claimed from 2012-2016, and it was never clear if it was a rolling plan or not because this was "vague reassurance" not "detailed business plan", so on that measure it might have ended in 2022 or might still cover out to 2026. Or they might still have one and just stopped mentioning it and it currently runs out to 2035.

[2] If you want a moddable / community-developed game that's a bit like Elite, then both Oolite (a bit like the original) and Pioneer (a bit like FE2) are still going and designed to be easily moddable.

[3] There are obvious questions as to whether Frontier, in a position where Elite Dangerous was shut down, would as a company remain sufficiently intact to spend developer time on doing this. It very much depends, I think, on whether their internal development processes have a serverless version for convenience in testing that they could spend a few days repackaging, or whether they'd need to start building one at that point.

I'm not sure it would be POSSIBLE for people to run up their "Own servers" given the complexity and scale of the galaxy... and the bgs, and the weekly tick etc etc...
Would be a beast of a job.

How on earth do people consider this game a graveyard? It's actively being developed and there is a strong amount of people playing it.

Per Inara, that pulls this information from the game, 14.9k people contributed to the Mahon CG that ended last week, and 4.5k people contributed to the Kaine CG. Figure that there are quite a few people out exploring that didn't do anything for the CG, and there are plenty of people doing AX or other stuff that wouldn't have hauled for the CG because they don't care, and this is a pretty decent population of players.

While I admit that mods could be cool....I simply don't trust most people with them in a multiplayer game

I absolutely love that I'm sharing a galaxy with thousands and thousands of other Cmdrs - playing on a private server with 3 other people, one of whom has a Sidewinder with 20 huge hardpoints.....meh 😱

Following up on what Ian posted, here is what David Braben said back in 2014:

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective.

Also this little snippet made me smile:

The Panther Clipper is coming. It is a big trading ship - a bit like the Lakon Type 9's big brother.

It only took 10 years, but we’re almost there 😂

Stow that, where's the Moray Star Boat? I want to "land" underwater!

I’d add additional character customization over the “There are 2 body types of male and female, you only get to change the head/face”… but within certain limits so you can’t create hideous abominations (too easily, anyway).

Of course, I’m also not a modder or programmer so I couldn’t actually do it if it were possible and I wanted.

Need full monster factory sliders.
