Any way to NOT use FSS and explore undiscovered planets?

"You're right, the [FSS graph] system is learnable, [...] very quickly you can jump into a system, perform the pulse scan, look at that bar and say "there's nothing there that I want", there's no Earth-likes, there's no whatever you're looking for, and get back out again."
One minor caveat with this is that there exist that certain type of metal-rich planet (the big non-landable ones with (usually) a very thick atmosphere) that, when surface-scanned, give you a nice 1-2 million credits. They are sometimes even more valuable than water worlds. The problem is that those can't really be distinguished in the FSS frequency bar, as they are all clumped together with the worthless kind of metal-rich planets.

Leaving a previously undiscovered system unscanned triggers my OCD. So I do have to do it.
Yup i know that feeling!
most likely because explorers have always been cherry-picking
Long may that continue, ive been in systems where folks have obviously honked'fss, then only scanned the ELW and left the real prize undiscovered on an unscanned planet surface 😉
The thing is we are not all looking for the same things.
I like it as it is, honk if you want a 'first' on the system, fss and look at the graph for ELWs,WW, Ammonia's etc if your after the credits, BUT having to really scan the full system to search out the other stuff does and should take time and effort.

And that's why we run tools like Observatory that report on the value of bodies as you scan with the FSS, you just set the min value you want to map and it will tell you if it is worth mapping, I personally set it for 1m credits because why bother going lower unless there is a secondary reason for visiting, like valuable bio, alien signals etc.

Ah, the good old days of discovering and exploring interesting systems. 😌
Parallax does work, but it's a different game than intended, so it makes it a bit of a hard pill to swallow in terms of game progression. If you don't mind that so much, have fun.
Cheers, and happy trails.

Its called 'Exploration', why should it be instant? I scan every new system i come across and sometimes some that others have honked just to see what they missed.
If your not interested in exploring just jump and scoop.
Honestly cant understand why some folks are in a rush these days.

Agree.
To be honest I feel that old system was raw, to simple, and even more shallow than FSS. Click button, and insta discover everything. Yay.

Require time and effort? What's a shame, like everything in this game, since we havent offline "creative" mode :)

btw, a lot of features, which can be interesting arent connected with planet type, so if "true explorers always cherrypicked, even after FSS" I have to say, that after 2m lys I'm not true explorer, because I always scanned everything. Because even some rice ball for 500 credits could contain some great surface features.
