The funny thing is, everybody likes the Cobra 3 and all the cool kids are currently flying Viper 4s and yet the AspS is very similar to both those ships and yet it doesn't seem to be held in anything like the same regard.
The problem, I fear, is that people like the Cobra and the Viper for sentimental reasons rather than practical ones.
All 3 ships are very similar and they're all actually pretty mediocre.
I spent a lot of time in a Viper 4, and it made me a LOT of money so I feel a bit of loyalty to it but, at the end of the day, I was only flying it because it was a cheap re-buy and it did the job.
Equally, I upgraded and engineered every part of my Cobra just 'cos I thought it deserved it.
Is it actually my first choice for any specific purpose though? Nope. Afraid not.
Perhaps it's a money thing?
When you don't have money you need to be creative but once money stops being an issue you're immediately going to choose other ships which do the job better instead.
It's certainly an interesting paradox though; the way the Cobra and Viper are thought of so highly while the AspS is dismissed even though there are pretty similar in performance and have their share of issues and compromises.
My personal thoughts on the Cobra III is that while it can do everything to a certain degree it isn't the best at anything apart from straight line speed (well not even that any more)
It pitches nice and rolls ok but can't yaw to save itself. The lower hard points are a total pain and the shields are paper thin. Thats probably why I prefer the Cobra IV to the III.
But if I'm honest I prefer the Viper IV to both of them! Good internals, good shields, good agility and speed (Actually beats the Cobra III on both counts on anything less than 4 pip to eng.) and with the military slot added makes it a very versatile multi-role ship now. I won't fly a Cobra III any more as the Viper IV is IMO hands down better.
Now however the ASP can have the same cargo, same weapons but vastly increased sustained fire due to the bigger PD and the agility is just so much fun to fly around. Now the ASP-S in my mind is a true multi-role. It has enough slots to do anything to a decent level (anyone saying otherwise doesn't know how to fit ships) it can put out a lot of damage due to TOT with said agility and PD. It is a tad weak in the shields
All in all I thin the ASP-S is spoilt by it's reputation and is now a very useful boat. I will be thinking of getting one soon (again

Mate I'd say just get one and see if you like flying it. if you do good if not get rid of it and try something else vOv
