Anyone else overwhelmed?

Yes!!! I wish there would have be a park with flat area a little bigger than the done area of my park and transfer the content including path and sculptured landscape there! ;) :D

I have been playing for like a bit over a week. It is very overwhelming in the beginning, but I was watching a lot of youtube videos on people doing buildings, and learn some cool hotkeys or techniques. But, what did is first I started doing the career, so for the easy I focused on putting in rides and already made-up shops with dropping blueprints, and just put a bit of scenery next to the rides. Then as I went into the medium, I started doing the custom shops/buildings, and with practice they got better. I'm still not a master, but there's a huge improvement already and I'm proud of my creations.

Sandbox could be great to practice without having to worry about money. For the career, I always save my game just in case I mess up and lose a lot of money, and I save my blueprints eitherway to plop them in later. But most important thing is don't give up :D

If i cant think of anything to build or make i either look on YouTube or the steam workshop. Sometimes it gives me really good ideas for my park

I did what most did, stated w/ pretty much basic buildings, nothing super fancy like, 'till I became more at ease with all the parts, and yes, it is a bit daunting at first seeing all the pieces you have to work with, but as you get used to it you can suddenly see the possiblities that are open to you...

So yea, like others said, start small, then when your more up to it go slightly bigger, then bigger then that, etc

I feel your pain OP. I've been playing for several weeks now, but I'm just not particularly creative when it comes to building. I build things and they look ok, but just not realistic. I end up downloading lots of things from the workshop to build my parks. I can't get my head around using shapes, I tried building something with them and it looks like a nursery child's effort.

My problem now is that it is such a time trap to build anything beyond "nursery child effort" so to say and it won't always become nice. So I have now started to download a lot of blueprints. It works nicely for shops and such. And if you are after the default pirate or default fairytale style, and now also sci-fi. But it won't work nice for the "filler" objects and it is hard to find objects that will match the more "experimental" styles. (people adapting things to make a theme that is not available)
