Anyone found a use for their double engineered 3A Shield Gen?

[EDIT: Treyas butter fingers hit the post button while still typing]

Three CGs, three rewards:
  • One T6, standard issue
  • One 3A Power Plant, with overcharged and armoured engineering
  • One 3A Shield Gen, "with thermal and kinetic resistance" - plus an undisclosed 40% increase in power draw

Presumably the intention was for all three to form a package for new(ish) players as a decent entry into bulk hauling.
However, based on Inaras final numbers for the 75% brackets a CMDR would have had to deliver a minimum of 4.444t across all three CGs. Anyone willing to go through with that would have probably bought their own T6 after the first couple of runs but even if they stuck to something smaller like a Cobra one delivery of Basic Medicines would have made enough profit to immediately switch to Advanced Medicines. Doing that and finishing in the 75% bracket would have made 60 MCr at least, enough to ditch the T6 for a T7 and A-rate it including a 5A Shield (which is flat out better than the 3A one from the CG).

I've tried to make sense of this and while the PP module found a new home in my DBX, the Shield Gen eludes me. None of my ships seem to gain any benefit from it as it is either to power hungry or outperformed by my existing ones. So, has anyone found a use for it?

The Power Plant has gone into my Phantom explorer with Thermal Spread experimental effect, running cooler and offering more power than the Overcharged PP it replaced 👍

The shield on the other hand seems to use a lot of power for no real benefit (compared to a normally engineered shield). A size 3 D-rated shield (Thermal / Hi-Cap) with a 2D Guardian Shield Booster is 1 tonne lighter and offers more balanced resistances (with 3 D-rated Resist Aug Shield Boosters) with comparable regen times

I guess the benefit will be felt more by people who have not engineered their shield yet.

The T-6 is just being used for module storage ;)

Power plant is good, Shield generated draw too much power and for T6, I have changed the ship name Sakura and docked in Sol

A shame that I don't really have a use for a combat Viper anymore, but for a new CMDR that might actually do. Thx!
Invent a use. I have all the worthwhile ships including multiples of many high end ones. Still fly the vipers just for that high speed fun factor. And also when i use a viper in pvp against anacondas and the like, losing is impossible. Even if they blow me up, i still win because their ammo cost more than my rebuy.

If they offered the same effect as an engineer blueprint called "resistance enhanced" or something like that, then i could see certain builds where it might be great on like a size 5 bi weave or something. It would be a decent mod, even with the somewhat ludicrous power consumption.

What rubs me the wrong way about this shield is that it's not a Bi-Weave. Putting it into something like Medium miner/trader/explorer/passanger runner makes sense, but the ones I shove in civvy craft usually aren't only downsized, but also downweighted, just there to avoid occasional hull scratching. Small ships don't really have enough space to take advantage of SCB builds, where this shield shines.

On PP - it's weight. Again, good for small combat ship that needs extra juice, but other than that, feels like a waste. In civvy craft I'm usually looking for every single Ly that can be squeezed out of it.

Really, no idea what to do with these modules. I got rid of Vulture long time ago and not really interested in Viper III. I have iCourier already.

My DBX used to have a 4A PP before. With the 3A it is slightly less efficient but a tad lighter and gained something like 1 or 2 lys in range. The chances of me ever noticing the difference are obviously next to nothing, but at least it serves its purpose as a memento (similar to the various decals handed out for other CGs). With the Shield however all of my ships would actually be worse off.

The thing is, I'm not salty or disappointed or some such. Just puzzled. Most of the double engineered modules are primarily useful as a boost for those just starting out, whhich is perfectly fine with me. But they usually have at least some value for seasoned CMDRs as well.

My racing Viper would like to agree on the fun factor :) I'm not much of a PVP pilot outside of the occasional CQC match but I can see your line of thinking. Given its zero rebuy cost the shield might help in that scenario.

I think it is a great shield for folks starting out. Other than the power draw which is pretty high, the shield is a huge improvement over a non engineered 3A. And it didn't require any materials or engineer unlocks to obtain. For experienced players, its a unique toy to play around with. I had initially been worried it was going to be some overpowered thing with 70% kinetic, 65% explosive and 40% thermal resistance. Im glad to see that isn't the case. Instead its kind of similar to a reinforced+thermo block blueprint. I'm glad its interesting without being overpowered.

Just as a side note: that's simply not true, both by Inara info and the real gains.

I have had my commanders (3 accounts) subscribed to recent CG's (to be precise - those 2 of them with modules)

All of them were at 50% contribution, all of them checked of being in that state 1 day - 24 hours - before the finish - with lesser contribution for 75% that you've mentioned.

And - I hate CG's...

Then I've read your post. Some heartbeats has been lost...

Then I've checked Inara and in-game situation

Good joke

But please - don't do that again=)

Shield Generator went to my passenger Python.

Power Plant went to my maximum hauling Cutter.

And with the credit earned while working on those two CGs I bought 10 T6s just to resell them at Alioth... figured it might be of help to replenish the stock.

Power plant is in my Cobra - kicks out more power tyhat the 4A it replaced with the advantage of being slightly lighter.
I was going to do the same with the shield, hoping the double engineering would make up for the size, but nope. No, no, no, no, no, No, NO!
