Apex on Fleet Carriers

HI all.
I think it would be nice to have the avaibility to travel from and to a fleet carrier with Apex Shuttles.

Perhaps you want to do on foot missions in a system or go to fight in Ground CZs via Frontline Solutions...
Or a Team plans to use one ship and one of the members does not want to leave a ship back on the carrier when using an emergency pod.
So using Apex Shuttles with FCs could be usefull.

There is no need of a booth with an NPC. A shuttle could be called via the On-Foot-HUD, like on planets, or a Terminal.
Also there could be a reasonable limitation on where to be able to use Apex Shuttles, like a designated "Drop Off Point" is in a maximum range off 2 or 3 jumps from the FC.

Think about bying a new ship and you normaly store your ships on your carrier. So you could travel to Shinrarta Dezhra / Jameson Memorial with an Apex Shuttle and fly with the new Ship to your Carrier instead of transfering one of the ships around. Even if you travel with a small ship to the next station and use Apex from there.

I think Apex service will be available together with release of FC interiors. But it will be enabled only in populated systems. I would be glad to be mistaken though.

So what happens when you are in an Apex Shuttle traveling to a FC and the FC renter decides to move it?

You get to work out how to use the redirect functionality
Never did more than 1 redirect - so it is interesting whether Apex fuel reserve is limited? E.g. if one uses redirect multiple times, could it happen that fuel is exhausted? Or Apex Adders always have fuel to return to original system? In the end there is no need in any other optional modules, but extra fuel tanks. Not even fuel scoop.

Good Question.

Well if you request a jump, it will take about 12 minutes until the Carrier locks up if the countdown starts at T-15mins.
And Apex can jump max 100ly.

To avoid getting Cmdrs getting stucked in the void, I would suggest:
  • The carrier could be accepted as a destination only if a detour to the next inhabitated system is possible.
  • As soon as a carrier accepts the jump request, it would be no longer accepted as an Apex remote destination.
  • Shuttles which are currently travelling to this carrier should present a message to the Cmdr that the destination requested a jump and he should think about a redirection to an other destination.
  • As a local destination, it could be accepted so long it could be reached up to 5 mins before the jump

There are solutions to avoid this problem.

Yes, someone will do that. we will laugh at them. Like drains.

What happens if the fc owner suddenly changes their docking to private?

What would you Do, if you want to loot a settlement and it has suddenly an other state than your last visit?
Like it is offline?

Maybe there needs to be an neccessary additional "backup destination". If the Apex Shuttle can not dock on the carrier for any reason, it will bring you to your chosen backup destination...

There are several solutions which can FDev choose from, and not every might be in out minds...

Just thought what if we had an option to direct Apex to land not on the landing pad, but somewhere close (~500m) to the settlement? We can call Apex to there, why not disembark there?

It would be alternative to dropship to go to CZ. Maybe safer way to travel to settlement occupied by scavengers too.

And what happens if the destination of the Fleet Carrier is out of range of any other APEX services or stations? After all a Fleet Carrier can jump 500ly and Apex has a max range of 100ly. I guess it's the escape pod for you my friend, or you remain a prisoner on the Fleet Carrier. You still want to go there even though you have no idea where you will end up?

I would love to have Apex available on my carrier to use it to travel to nearby stations in order to do on foot missions / frontline work.
I would also use it to return to my carrier without a need to go back to the last place where I had docked my ship, just to go back to the carrier.

I presume it would also allow the community to meet at the carrier without need of flying there by ships.
Potentially it would also nake more traffic on the carriers :)

Regarding technicalities:
  • It should be totally safe to order apex from carrier to any station in range, as long as carrier has not scheduled departure or as long as the landing bays are not locked yet,
  • Regarding flying to carrier, it should be possible to do it as long as there is any station in 100ly distance from it, so in case the carrier departs, Apex could reroute the journey to the station. It would also work for the cases where commander ordered an apex then logged off during the flight and logged back in few days later, long after the carrier departed.

The only thing I would add though is to give a possibility to transfer 1/current ship to the current pilot location by using terminal. It should be possible to do it on both, carrier and the outposts, without need of having the shipyards/Inter Astra available. This would help preventing the pilots from being stranded or having to use the escape pods to go back to the previous location.
