You fished me out of supercruise, and naturally, I thought you were going to attack me, particularly since you had not sent me a message first. I admit I did jump the gun by firing at you first, which is why I apologise. It was not my intention to destroy you, only to drive you off. (Which is, incidentally, why I did not fire on you when you intercepted me the second time.)

I hope there are no hard feelings, though please note that interceptions are, generally speaking, rarely a good conversation starter.

Made me feel guilty. He lost 5% hull, I lost about 20% shield.

Not the first time I've read of a misunderstanding between interdictor and interdictee. The game really should do a better job of making it clear that interdicting somebody is an attack in and of itself. Perhaps ships could automatically be flagged hostile to each other upon dropping into normal space.

This would make sense, except for the pest security forces that pull you over for a scan :/ Currently when someone interdicts you they show up as hostile, but when dropping into normal space they change from hostile to neutral until they attack you? At the very least interdicting someone is bad manners, if you do it dont expect a friendly o7

Let me get this straight: Someone interdicted you, you opened fire but stopped when they showed no signs of retaliation. Then you both low waked away, and the same CMDR interdicted you again, with no communications of their intentions in either instance?

I admire your humility, but I don't think there's a reason to apologise when someone is pretty much asking to get shot with their actions

Yeah, I wouldn't personally see interdiction as anything other than the start of a violent encounter. But apparently some people do get the impression that they should expect friendly chitchat after interdicting another player.

I figured security forces could show up as neutral after the interdiction, since it's lawful in their case. My ideal would be them getting behind you and demanding that you drop for a scan, then going on to interdict you if you refuse to comply within a reasonable time. But that would probably be a fair bit of dev work for little gain.

Interdicting a clean ship incurs a fine. The interdicter appears as hostile to highlight them on your sensors for easier targeting (I often use this to evaluate whether I should try to evade, or submit and fight). Fine is not a kill warrant, thus they will remain clean until they break the law e.g. by opening fire at you IF you are clean AND you have crime reporting on.

Edit: I gave this point another thought. Seeing that interdiction is a hostile action in itself, it would make sense that the interdicter is immediately highlighted as red when you drop into normal space. However, a "red target" carries the implication that you are free to retaliate, which in certain cases would lead to YOU getting punished for assault and possibly a murder without you understanding why.

Oh, he returned fire, then ran when I brought down his shields and started damaging his hull. He high-waked out, I went back on my way, and he jumped back in -- and interdicted me again. This time, I kept my guns stowed. He just sat there, looking at me, and I low-waked out.

You see, I felt bad about it 'cause I was the one to fire first . . . I mean, it could have been that he was about to ask for directions . . . (though the equivalent would be to drive another driver off the road to ask him where to get a decent fry-up -- sure as heck wouldn't attempt to do that in the USA. )

It's also possible that despite instancing with the ship the other player was getting the "invalid communications target" error so was unable to communicate.

Either way this game can be really odd and this thread made me smile so thank you all for that

If someone interdicts you they are looking to either straight-up destroy your ship (most likely) or at the very least to pirate you and take your cargo. There might be the occasional silly trolling from an interdiction, such as when I was flying an Anaconda and interdicted by an Eagle that tried to fight, but he couldn't really do any damage to my Anaconda's shields and was obviously just being annoying. Generally speaking if you interdict someone you are planning to fight them and if there is any delays it is only so they can close distance or get into an optimal position to attack before they engage you.

The only reason they didn't immediately attack you the second time was that they clearly knew you were well-armed and based on the first encounter and he was probably hoping he might somehow catch you by surprise before opening fire after the second interdiction.

Anyone who takes control of my ship away from me bye interdiction or any other means I consider and will always consider a hostile Act ! Such action will be dealt with accordingly either use of lethal defense or evasive maneuvers. Interdiction against a law-abiding Commander is a crime plain and simple. Enough said fly safe Commander
