Are beams and multicannons truly the end-all?

IL2 had wholesale changes to the way the flight model worked for many years after the initial release, as well as weapon strength and effectiveness. If something wasn't right they changed it, for better or worse sometimes. With Frontier.. we can have any thrusters we want.. but the ship goes the same speed anyway. It's just one example, but it reflects a lot of the design decisions made in the game.

Perhaps it was this way in some previous version, but this is currently not the case. Upgrading thrusters has a measurable effect on performance, all the way up to the most expensive thrusters a ship can take.

Sort of like a Borderlands model of weapon creation?

Yes:D borderlands had a very cool way of making weapons. How many different types were there? A few 100k types of weapons millions? That's what we need. but with all the components we can put on our ships.
There would be setups variety from the utterly useless to the extreme exotic.
Wouldn't that be cool?
Then we could have real discussions on what gear to get where and it would always be something new. Something rare, something fun, and our ships would feel so personal no two setups the same:D

Come on frontier! I know you can do it and it would fit the 400 billion star systems galaxy just perfect:D

It was a bug it got fixed in 1.1.

I used dual beams and multis for eternity in the Cobra. I tried mixing up the weapons routine a bit after I got used to beating the 1.1 elite anacondas with a viper, and tried seeing how to refine it so I can disable them faster and come out with less damage at the end. Turns out the most effective one so far is a pair of class 1 beams and class 2 cannons. The beams fire for ages so you can hold at a distance and bleed their shields away, then the hefty cannons rip straight through the power plant in just a few shots. Anaconda pops and you're 200k richer. You don't even have to get particularly close to smash the thing apart in short order, just aim for the belly.

I might see if I can do it in an Eagle now, having a hell of a lot more fun since I sold the Asp and bought several fully stocked small ships with the money.

Here's my bounty hunting Viper loadout if you want to try that, it's as good as I could possibly get it while still being able to power everything necessary, so there's no room for even a better KW scanner. Make sure to set the cargo hatch, FSD and fuel scoop to lowest priority so they get turned off when you deploy weapons. No problems with heat and if you save your ammo for when the shields are down there's easily enough for half a dozen tough fights before you need to reload. Tested successfully on every big ship so far. D-scanner is there because why not, didn't need anything else. Might install an advanced one for shiggles.

I want a Nommer that fits on the larger ships. In combat the Nommer opens like big jaws and your smaller target gets sucked inside.

Once you've nommed them, hoses pump sleeping gas into the captured ship. Then you can subject your victim to some alien probing before releasing them.

Yes very interesting indeed :)
Well, tell you what, just sit tight and answer the door when its knocked Okie ;)
The men in white coats are very friendly.
Cheers Cmdr's

Different weapons are good at different thngs, Frag canons are a beast, but carry low amount of ammo and need some close up skill to get the best out of them, plasma accelerator packs a meaty punch and has done for more than a few pythons and anacondas on my viper. again the shot needs to be a good one. Multicannons are the go to weapon for many as they are reliable, have good ammo ad do reasonable damage, but are pretty pants against shields. Beams are pretty good but need to have some smart design to get the best out of them and manage that heat. Pulse lasers are a really good middle man to.

I guess it all boils down to play style, your own skill and the limitations you have on cash.

The thargoids would insta shoot any deployed energy bomb. You could never use it against them (certainly on spectrum and amiga versions) military lasers where good though. Also thargoids weren't really that tough once you had a military laser, I used to crash into hyperspace and farm the remote ships. Mind you Elite was much harder back then in many ways, but easier in others, certainly far more into the action and shooty and a lot less aimless bumbling about.
