Are jump gates a good idea?

I say yes. But they will be extremely expensive, quadratically proportional to the distance from the gate.

They are so expensive because not only are they expensive to build and maintain, they are extremely expensive to operate, energy-wize, keeping the tunnels open and stable. Snd oh yeah, they can be damaged by npc's and CMDR's alike.

Would you risk an exorbitant amount of credits and the danger of an unstable tunnel just to travel a short distance?

Best case scenario is that you get spit out in some random location with massive damage and your FSD destroyed. If you're lucky you'll just get destroyed outright.

Worst case scenario is that you get punched into witch space staring down a couple confused Thargoids. Don't get destroyed! If you do then your CMDR is lost forever. You must fly around in witch space to find a weak point, cause a misjump, and hopefully punch back into real space.

Oh, and did I mention that witch space is fluid space and is corrosive? Yeah, your shields are ineffective and it's eating away at your hull, as well as crushing your ship. And don't let me mention all the weird EM and gravitational phenomena that's causing havoc with your modules and pushing your ship every way but straight.

So yeah, I think jump gates are a good idea, if you're brave, or stupid enough.

On the one Hand I like the idea of jump gates as a sci fi nerd.

On the other hand do I question the economical viability.
Take a jump gate to Colonia for example. Nowadays you can reach Colonia in under 4 hours utilizing a 70Ly ship and Neutron boosts. That's half of what a truck driver in Germany is allowed to work a day.
So the distance isn't that far any more. Granted, for a fully laden T9 it would propably take much longer, but it is not comparable to say the journey of Columbus to America, more like a Trucker one week on the road.

So no real need to invest trillions for jump gates.

Sure, introduce jump gates into Elite.

You'll need a hundred billion credits to afford the module to "discover" one, and once activated...…

You'll find yourself next to a gigantic Quasar, not far from Jupiter which has magically appeared in the Stanton system, in a crashed Aurora A10 variant, being pushed off a cliff by a Space Bulldozer in zero gravity.

Oh, the giggles!

Remember in Eve one of the troubles is the Jump gates being block by PvP. People would be forced into a solo in Elite Dangerous to use them. Annoying. Also, David Braben in the earlier interviews said he did not want Jump gates in the Galaxy it would make the galaxy smaller.

Note you can get to Colonia in 107 jumps we don't need jump gates.

X much?
Gates dont make sense at all in elite universe.
Fluid space? Lol both ideas are a straight ripoff with some elite sprinkled on top.
Better get back to that dream on the inside of your eyes.

No..no..no.

Good or bad they are unnecessary everything we can fly or see flying except drones can jump to another star with its own internal capabilities.

Hell no. Galaxy is shrinking fast enough as it is. Colonia in a hundred jumps? Hardly feels like 20,000LY means a damn anymore

Short answer is yes, they’re a good idea, but no, we won’t ever get them because the sense-of-scale zealots will throw a biowaste-fit.

You mean the "zealots" who bought Elite Dangerous because they wanted an Elite game, and the sense of flying around in a humongous galaxy is a core aspects of one such game?
