Are Tip-Offs worth it?

So, I got this message come through as a tip-off telling me to go scan a thing at a place and they'll pay well, now, it's a couple hundred LY away from where I am now, and I don't know whether I should expect combat, or a nice leisurly scanning (though I'm betting combat as apparently some mercenaries didn't do well against a blockade) and if so whether it'd be something I can even handle solo. I've done my fair share of blowing up recently, and having also only recently bought both my Courier and Clipper I'd rather not waste cash by finding out the hard way it's not something I should do alone, especially if I take one of my bigger, combat ready vessels.

Some ideas., you could:
  • Go in your ship with the cheapest rebuy.

  • Turn in all your bonds/bounties/explo data before you leave.

  • Just forget about it...

Generally:
- combat is possible but it's generally something your SRV can handle - a few skimmers and turrets, perhaps. Your ship can run away easily enough, or be parked at a safe distance
- they can certainly be handled solo
- they do not in general pay well if you count the travel time (but comparable to surface missions with comparable difficulty otherwise)
- you generally get some sort of minor lore/story fragment from the scanning

Overall I'd advise doing them if you're in it for the experience, and avoiding them if you're in it for the money.

Ah, thanks, right now definitely the money. Grinding hard for Empire rep to get a cutter.

Depends if it's a settlement or a crash site POI.
Settlement obviously requires getting through the skimmers and turrets.
Crash will usually be deserted.

Ultimately, no. Probably not.
Nothing that isn't the current meta is really "worth it"... but we all spend time doing things that aren't the current meta simply cos we enjoy doing those things.

A while back I was getting tip-off missions to recover a data-core (usually some blurb about a crashed ship and insurance payments) that did pay more than Cr100m but I think that might've been nerfed because I've tried similar missions more recently and haven't been paid anything like that much.

Shame really.
At the very least, tip-offs should yield big rep' rewards since you are doing a "special favour" for somebody.

Didn't do them because they usually require me to fly hundreds of LY with a note to expect combat so I don't feel like flying there in a combat ship as it will take many jumps.

One time I said "eff it" and took on one with my Viper MK4 built for EDO settlement hopping. Came across a crashed DBX with a data core worth about 900K, no combat.

It was an interesting experience, but I'm guessing all other tip off missions will be the same so that'll be my first & last time doing it.

I've done a couple of tip off missions. That was a few years ago and I was given a System name, planet and coordinates. Neither mission involved combat or paid that well, around 500k each if I remember correctly.

Not done one since but I've not been offered one in a long time.

As someone else said, missed opportunity for some deeper and more immersive mission gameplay.

It's possible that the "mysterious stranger" missions eventually unlock Raxxla or something. Speculation, and as it doesn't seem to have done that for anyone, maybe thousands are needed!

I have never heard of 100 million in this context. However, it has been quite a while now since I tried a tip-off. At that time, they were still very bugged and it's very annoying when, after all the effort, which is not inconsiderable, you suddenly find that the item (or the data) you are looking for is not there. That wasn't worth the effort for me. For 100 million, however, I would certainly have reconsidered. However, I haven't been offered one for a long time. No idea what the reason could be?
I usually get them when I'm doing refugee work, either at Thargoid burning stations in the nebulae or warzones in the Bubble.

I did got one today. A mystery tip! I was very curious. Such wow! I mean.... This must be from Dark Wheel... Would make perfect sense.

The mission was to collect some secret data. All righty then!

I travelled 300LY to planet that had some kind of prison on it. I took my trusty SRV and approached the prison. I was greeted with missiles and laser fire. They didn't like me at all. I shot plenty of guardian robots but they kept spawning back. Over and over again. Very anti-cool.

I had to pull-back and re-think my strategy!

After 30 mins of struggling my heart out I got totally mad and just boosted my SRV over the fences and walls, landing next to the data core. Perfect move! A quick scan and I was done. At least I thought so...

But behold! Closer look into the mystery note and it says that I must contact tip giver as soon as the mission is completed. Ummmmmmm, contact who, where and how???

I am so confused now. How do I contact this mysterious guy?

I will keep spinning on dock until they contact me again. Please send help!

For everyone mentioning they haven't had a tip-off in a while, if you're wanting one, I suggest running some data missions, think it might be aq delayed "reward" from those, cause I currently have 6 of them.
Edit:
Make that 8.
Not sure if it's the "Courier" or the "Sensitive Data" missions, though I actually got these recent two after running some "Disable the megaship turrets" missions, but didn't pay attention to which hand-in the messages arrived during, so they might be from that.

Can't recall the exact history but I think they got revised back when FDev introduced "scenarios" (those "help I've run out of fuel/need food" POIs which everybody ignores).

Previously they'd involve going somewhere and finding a crashed DBX/SRV/SLF and scanning it's data-core.
After the update they got enhanced and you'd find things like crashed Annies with cargo strewn around, big lumps of wreckage (of the type previously only seen floating around in space) or even little "outposts" with inactive turrets and sheds you could drive your SRV inside.

The mission that paid Cr100m was at one of those "enhanced" locations.
There was a little outpost with a couple of sheds and a crashed ship to scan, which earned me the Cr100m.

I've done a few tip-off missions more recently and I haven't seen any more of these "enhanced" locations so I'm wondering if FDev removed them from the game again.
