Are we playing the same game?

I see all this talk about griefing etc but since being back in the bubble and flying around doing odd job missions I have seen a couple of cmdrs and that was near Sol. Now I'm a distance away I haven't seen anyone for a while.

I'm wondering where these people were to get attacked so much, yes I know CGs are a hotbed of PvP action but that's just us or them scenarios.

What platform are people getting griefed on as on PC I haven't seen it. Yes I got murdered ONCE in Barnard Star but that was my only PvP action and I was 1.2Mm from docking so wasn't really in the "gotta kill me spirit" more like the "areally we there yet" mindset.

Thoughts?

No. But as you said things can get hairy if you're interested in CGs or something new crops up that needs to be explored, etc.

I think time of day and where you are in the world can affect who you instance with enormously. Like you I've only had a couple of occasions where I had unwanted PvP that I felt wasn't in the spirit of the game. I'm in the UK and play mostly evenings and weekends.

Me too I tend to play after 8-9pm the only PvP encounter I had was with a Cutter and my Side didn't stand a chance to be honest, I tried to initiate contact but got nothing back. I don't consider it griefing though just murder as it only happened once.

I'm GMT +2 and Play arout 8 PM. I too don't meet anyone at that time. Sometime my only Chance to experience multiplayer is multicrew.

I'm located in Asia, hence I'm usually up when the rest of the playerbase is sleeping... except for them Aussie lads :)

My usual playing time is about 0800 GMT to about 1300 GMT on weekdays. I have tried once or twice to be online when everyone else is, the experience wasn't that great... mission boards start timing out, I get dropped mid-jump etc etc. They hardly ever happen at my usual play times.

Im playing the same game as everyone else, I just play it my way and as such I think the last person I saw in game was last year some time. We were both in Pythons he took off from the outpost I was heading to we sort of waved via a roll of the ships and that was that. :)

Where I am, there's so many commanders that you can hardly get into open, and it's not even a CG.

I've got more than 4500 hours of active play in Open, mostly in inhabited space. Never been griefed.

Some people choose to see a 'griefer' behind every hollow contact and injustice, if not an outright personal attack on them as a player/person, in any hostility against their in-game assets...others don't.

The so called griefer players are not as prevalent as the "media" would have you believe, at least in my experience that is.

I have been destroyed a handful of times by players but never outside of the spirit of the game. It was always at a CG or other hotspot but I have since learned tactics to avoid and evade the situation most times.

Once I dropped from SC into the fray around Hutton Orbital during the Mug CG and was promptly pounced on. My trade Python with 0% Integrity didn't stand a chance. BOOOM!!! My first destruction at the hands of another player. Ahh, the memories. :D

Another time I got jumped as I dropped into the Robigo system during the heyday of the Shadow Missions. That was good fun and only bummed me out to the extent that I had to make those 20-odd jumps all the way back from my last port of call.

But I have never found packs of griefers or even single ones roaming around. Media hype I say!

I even went as far as to run local transport passenger missions to the surrounding area in an unarmed Orca out of the Eravate system for an entire month and was never once interdicted or even sneered at by any bad guys. Not even that under-overlord weirdo bothered to so much as wave.

I am GMT -05:00

I generally play on my days off beginning around 11am GMT and going off and all day until 1am GMT. Days that I do that work thing I wont be able to get on until 7 or 8pm GMT.

CGs and topical points of interest( like the ruins sites when they were news ) are a no go in Open unless you take a PvP ship.
I was griefed a couple of times at ruins site, including when I was landed and even once at Colonia approaching Jaques station, in an unarmed ASP with no cargo.

Everyone has an answer:
Fdev: we'll add crime and punishment and see what happens ( my guess is not a lot ).
Griefers: Just get gud !!! ( ie give up doing what you want to do and grind a PvP ship and fly that all the time )
non PvPs: Fly in PG's ( or make excuses for the griefers and live with the re-buys )

If FDev really cared they'd just add a PvE mode - ie: all weapons ( and kinetic ie ramming ) cause zero damage to Player ships. Problem solved no need for Mobuis and 99% of the private groups.

FDev want players to meet up and play together - adding a PvE would mean that would happen a LOT more. ( of course fixing the instancing issues would help too ! )

I guess people's perceptions are going to be subjective (big surprise, eh?).

My stat's tell me that I've spent 19 weeks playing ED and in that time I've been "ganked" about a dozen times.
Objectively, that's a miniscule risk but, then again, 5 of those times happened over a period of 24 hours, near my "home system" so that certainly hacked me off a bit.

*EDIT*

At the risk of repeating myself, it's not the PvP that's annoying. It's the lack of consequences.

On one notable occasion, I had my mining T9 destroyed on the way out to a mining expedition so no cargo, no BGS implications and no RPing.
Just somebody who wants to rain on somebody else's parade.

What did irritate me was that, upon respawning, my ganker arrived back at the same station and hovered in front of me, all menacingly :)rolleyes:), and then manoeuvred his FGS above me in an attempt to prevent me from launching.
Cos, y'know, he needs to really drive home the point that he's a one badass dude for spacing a T9 that's only armed with mining lasers.

It's irritating that he can do that and neither the station or SysSec take the opportunity to punish him for his criminal actions - even though they'll cheerfully destroy another ship for a single stray shot in a RES.

As long as one avoids CG's, Ruins, Tharg ruins, Engineer bases and Shinrata, open is a rather pleasant place.

This definitely seems to be a luck-of-the-draw thing. I've been to Shinrata and Engineers bases loads of times (in Open, natch), and not once have I been inconvenienced. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, mind.

I've gone to Shinrarta a number of times... the hollow pips there don't bother anyone else... everyone's just minding their own business...

It's hit or miss really. Sometime you can fly an explo ASP there and have nice friendly chats with other players*, and sometimes you just know that there is no way you'll make it to the slot ^^

GC's on the other hand always have shenanigans ganking arround. No way arround it. (well, except tooling up or mode switching).

The whole DayZ in space is frankly not what I expected open ED to become (totally breaks immersion for me, no society would work in such
a setting, especially not the sprawling interstellar trading we have in ED). I was more hopping for a dangerous wild west vs safe coast cities vibe.

But then again, I'm not making the game so since I don't like it (busy areas in open) I don't play it.

*In shinrata, I would say 75% chance of friendly chats.

I play in Solo when I play, playing at my pace, doing what I want when I want, ( have played open and have experienced griefing first hand and wriitten in the forums about it).
Griefing is where a player or two would repeatedly pick on the same player time and time again. But it seems now that every thread concerning this subject is talking about one off instances of murder in game. That is part of the game isnt it, Piracy / Assasination. Threads like these should only be written if the player starting the thread is repeatedly targetted by the same player/s.
I dont know but do FDev have a complaint system where instances of suspected Griefing can be investigated?
