We're not "nicking their meta-alloys", we are protecting their meta-alloys from themselves. It's a rescue operation, saving the Pleiades from the horrible bugs that have infested it and restoring it to glorious human ownership.
No OP, they (or maybe Frontier) are the baddies for not communicating to us. I mean they've proven that they know Morse Code (very bizar) and yet they won't give a the scoop on what they want! They're also baddies for picking up ascape pods and keeping them ... that is unless they are delivering them to the moon, which none of us can visit!

Humanity is not a race of perfectly moral angels. "Shoot first, then keep on shooting because stopping and asking questions is too hard" is far too often the human answer to a problem, especially when some darn fool sells them guns. It is entirely likely that Humans would have started a shooting war with friendly, pacifistic aliens.
The Thargoids are not, however, "friendly, pacifistic aliens". They are incredibly xenophobic, and refuse to come to terms of peaceful coexistence with other sentient races, even when such peace gestures are offered. They are prefectly capable of understanding human communications and of communicating back; they choose not to do so; presumably, because they see no point in doing so.
